CCI makes what is described as "large game" rounds in .22 LR. They come as both subsonic and as Stinger equivalents.

Has anyone had any experience with either or both for accuracy and terminal effect.

CCI Big Game

Never heard of either. I know several old timers who used 22 lr on moose. They used standard velocity solid nose rounds. As far as Stingers go, they are quite destructive on small game, so i doubt they would penetrate very far on large game. Also, I have not seen rifle the Stingers will shoot accurately out of. The Blazers were OK, though.

BTW, large game with a 22 is really unethical. The old timers I know of were meat hunters, who relied on hunting to feed their families, and often the moose they shot were snared. In their case, survival came before sportsmanship.

actually isn't Rimfire use on Moose/Bear/Deer ILLEGAL for hunting. At least in Ontario. I just checked my 2010 hunting guide book and it says that. YOU CANNOT use Rimfire rounds for large game.

From CCI's own FAQ ;) :

http://www.cci-ammunition.com/education/faqs.aspx

Q: I bought a box of Stinger ammunition and want to hunt coyotes out to 300 yards, how high will I need to hold to be on at 300 yds?

A: Know the limitations of the product, Stinger will reach 300 yards, but it is not a "coyote killer" at that range. Unless your scope is different than mine, if you are sighted-in at about 100 yds, the coyote will not be visible in the scope when you hold high enough to hit it.

I can't find what you described on the CCI web site, I would imagine "large game" for a rimfire would be coyotes or jackrabbits.

I find it hard to believe any rimfire manufacturer advocating 22 LR for any big game animal, no matter how small or meek.
Are you, :onCrack: ?

we have no such laws here in NZ ..
buddy of mine dropped a mid sized red doe with a .17HMR round to the head.. about 60 meters

.22mag would be better imho if you were dead set on rimfiring big game

The Kittery Trading Post lists both on their site. Both rounds employ a frangible bullet that allegedly splits into three sections thus creating three wound tracks.
I think that "large game" may be a relative thing that compares suitability of a regular .22 LR to something else but I'm not sure what.
Sounds like the subsonics might have some use in "black ops" if you get off on that stuff.
Anyhow I was just wondering if anybody has shot either and what their experience was.
Thanks Fellas

I have some of the early CCI segmented hollow point ammo called Quik Shok and it worked great on gophers but they are about the size of a pop can and a bit taller, not large game even for a .22 LR.
