My dad is getting his PAL and he would like to get it ASAP. So my question is can you send your PAL application away before you do the Safety Course test? I thought I read that on here somewhere just wanna be sure.
Thanks.

it will take longer than you think.

the cfsc, the crfsc, a month later, waiting for the stamped copies, then the PAL appy, took me 5 months. you could prolly do it in 3 if you could findthe courses and get in quick.
my opinion.

+1. I tried to do it in the least amount of time possible by taking a proactive approach (ie. phone calls, sending documents ASAP by xpresspost) and being anal about triple and quadruple-checking my documents, and here was my breakdown:

April 21 - Challenged and Passed CFSC
April 28 - Challenged and Passed CRFSC
April 30 - Sent documents + money order via registered mail
May 24 - Notified of an 'error' in my documents by regular mail (in spite of my diligence)
May 27 - Corrected documents sent xpresspost
July 2 - PAL/RPAL Issued

And I didn't really record the dates, but there were many phone calls to the CFC in between each of those dates. You really have to stay on top of them. And above all, be polite! ;)

As people have said, you're better off taking the course first before trying to muck around with forms and everything. If all goes well you can end up doing it pretty quick.

I missed the early courses this summer, most were full by the time I tried to sign up. Found one at the end of June, 4 days before it was about to take place.
Passed both courses over the weekend, mailed the app in, they got it on July 5th.
Called in the week later, on the 11th, fixed an issue on the app and did the interview. References called in the same day.
License issued August 2nd, just waiting for it in the mail (I bet they're walking it all the way from NB though).

TL;DR: If you're lucky you can get it from scratch in just under 2 months. Try not to listen too much to the horror stories of ridiculous wait times, it'll just get you down.

For Ontario residents the way the CFO insists the course/test paperwork is handled adds a month delay before you actually get a hardcopy of the results of your test.

Just went through this process... all you can do is be anal about your paperwork... Challenging the CFSC and CRFSC may save you some time... In Alberta I received my test results right at the test so I was able to mail my PAL paperwork the same day.

He should download the material online, challenge the PAL test, then send in his app. without waiting for Ont. stamped results (to get the 28 day clock running), then stay on top of progress once he sends in the results.
