Hey guys (gals?) looking for some advice. I've been thinking about getting a decent single shot .22 but want something that is decent quality, and can accept a small scope or red dot. I want it as a gun my kids can shoot with. Before anyone suggests iron sights, they've been trained with my air rifles and know how to use them already. I'm looking for something that is a step up from air rifles, not too heavy, not too long, and that I can feed with CB longs maybe. Attention span is what it is, but the kids really seem to like shooting and I want to be ready when the air guns don't cut it anymore. (not there yet)

Thanks,
Rob

BTW~if it's a rifle I can get parts for (if/when required~not accessories) that would be ideal too.

Marlin 915Y, or the stainless version with fiber optic sights. (915YS) I bought a set for the boys a couple years back, great little guns.

Sure the Cooeys are good, or a Winchester 67.

I chanced upon a super deal on a very slightly used Savage MKI Youth model with an Accutrigger, so that will be my grandson's starter .22 single shot.

You can also get a mag-fed Savage MKII/Marlin/Cooey, use a single-shot adaptor or load single rounds. That way, you are ready for the next step up.

.22 Few makers make .22 for youth,go see website of Henry firearms, savage

CZ Scout

Hi, buy a CZ Scout, comes with a single shot adapter, when they outgrow that you can buy 5 or 10 round mags for it. Very accurate and excellent quality. Later.

10Mark22 hit the nail on the head. the CZ scout will shoot with $1000 rifles, the kids will enjoy shooting a more accurate rifle and you can switch from single shot to 10 shot magazines. You should find a new one for $400 which is a bargain for how well it shoots.. Loves AE 40 grain $19 for 400 rounds, you too will enjoy shooting it. Really its the rifle you should absolutely buy.

I Have a savage cub single shot for my wife who is tiny and I think it great. It has the accutrigger and a nice thumbhole stock. If your on a tighter budget I think they have some single shot youth huskies on tradex that look like a screaming deal for a first .22.

A 67 Winchester is much higher quality than a Cooey.
There was a like new Winchester Model 67 youth model, with a considerable shorter, but quite stout barrel and shorter stock, at the gun show last spring for $100. I only saw it after some lucky guy had purchased it.

CIL/Anschutz 180 has the load ramp so you just drop one in and close it up, no fiddling to get in the chamber. Has a trigger that is fully adjustable unlike any other 22. I sold my CZ once I shot the Anschutz. Can be had for under 300 used.

Full disclosure time~I own an Anschutz 1451 bolt action with a single-shot adapter, so I suppose I "have" the ideal gun already. What had in my mind's eye was a gun I wouldn't mind my kids using ( :) ) with say, CB longs~something quiet. Also, I think for their sake, a red dot maybe...?

My Anschutz has a 9X scope on it, and is in near-mint condition..in spite of the nearly 2,000 rounds down the pipe. I'd be happy to keep it that way. Moreover, I'd rather concentrate on teaching them safe gun handling than be worried that they ding it.

Rob, I had a 911 twin turbo with two scratches on it, that my kids put on it (one was caused by my little guy helping me clean it, his intentions were wonderful). It reminded me for a few weeks that I valued an $80,000 car more than my million dollar kids, you have the perfect rifle for your perfect kids. Who cares if its gets banged up or scratched. Those little marks are reminders of life's events that when you are old you will look back on and cherish a helluva lot more than a pristine gun. I promise.

Bingo! Actually my kids (and grandson) are priceless;)

Still my grandson will learn on a mint Savage MKIG-Y that is tucked away in the safe, with his name on it.

I went with the Anschutz 1903. not a bad price for a match rifle, but up around a centerfire for sure. If you want something a little cheaper try the Savages

any cz 452, will accept the single shot adapter magazine from the scout, they all use the same mags, so it gives you plenty of options for expansion later. My 6 year old likes to use to use the single shot at time and at other times likes to use the 10 shot mag. and don't forget the yodave trigger upgrade for $15.oo, have to spend twice to 3 times the money to buy a rifle that shoots as good.
