Rossi pump .22 won't feed - ideas?

Hey guys,

I have one of those Rossi copies of the Winchester 62 gallery pump rifle. Its in great shape and I don't think it saw much use, if any, before I got it. (bought through an estate).

Trouble is, I can't get it to feed consistently, even after cleaning. It feeds .22 shorts about once in every two pumps, and sometimes it takes 10 pumps to load a .22lr. Could this just be due to tight tolerances, or is there something else I should be looking at?

There is/are probably a cartridge stop that holds the case until the pump reaches it's rearmost point. My first guess is that somehow the stop isn't releasing the case. I'd look and see if the pump's action bar is bent or misaligned, or if somehow it's not reaching it's max travel.

Hrm. Near as I can tell, the cartridge stop isn't attached to the action bar - it's below the lifter on the same assembly. But I will look into that.

It's very frustrating to have an almost-new gun with a slick-as-silk action that won't feed as soon as you put a cartridge into it.

Is the lifter consistently failing to pick up the first round you load, or does it happen with any round in the magazine? I have a Winchester Model 62A that will sometimes fail to pick up the first round if loaded with the action closed, but if you load the tube with the action open, it works fine.

Also, check to make sure that the takedown screw is tight. If it's loose, you could be getting misalignment of the upper and lower receiver, which could cause feeding problems.

I doubt it would be on the action bar, but odds are it is acted on by the action bar.

The problem is most noticeable with the first shell.

I pumped it 10 times to pick up the first shell at one time. Once I chamber the first shell it's hit and miss as to whether it will chamber. It definately picks up shorts easier than lr.'s.

The takedown screw is as tight as I can get it by hand. Should I use a screwdriver? I never had to with my cousin's rossi.

You don't need to use a screwdriver on the takedown screw; a coin should work just fine.

Looked at it again this morning. There's a bit of lateral play in the carrier, which theoretically could stop it from reaching the bottom of its stroke, if it moved to the side a bit. That would stop it from picking up a fresh shell.

Does anyone else on here have one of these rifles? I'm curious to know if your carrier assembly moves much from side to side. If that indeed is the problem, I may be able to dremel out the frame a bit, OR put in a shim.
