1911 colt gold cup vs kimber target

Come on Nick! Neither one is a "target" pistol until it has been accurized. That being said, either would shoot 4 to 5 inches at 50 yards with decent ammo.

I have had two Colt Series 80 GC MKIVs, one blued other stainless. Both had loose Frame-Slide and Barrel-Slide fits. Lousy gritty creepy triggers. Did not like the wide triggers too. The rear sight pin worked loose, but that was taken care of easily. Accuracy in my not-so-skilled hands was just like the regular Government models, minute-of-bond paper at 25 meters. Never really impressed me and kept me wondering what all the buzz was about Gold Cups. Eventually sold both.

Guess what I am trying to say is that the GC is not a target pistol out of the box, just my .02 of course.

No experience with Kimbers, sorry.

This may sound unreasonable but Colt= 3 MIM parts+ 2 Cast parts, Kimber unknown. Winner: Colt

The MIM parts on current Colts are: Sear, Disconnector, Mag Release. The cast parts are: Beavertail and thumb safeties.

Colt generally has the best quality small parts of any of the major 1911 makers. I also prefer the looks of the fine, rear-only slide serrations compared with the coarse, front and rear serrations of the Kimber.

Either pistol will shoot more accurately than probably 95% of shooters can hold.

The issue is that these two companies market their pistols as a "target" model. Yes, there are more expensive "better" ones out there. But which one of these two is more accurate? Thanks

People who buy guns strictly on accuracy comparisons quickly come to find their gun is only as accurate as they are. Provided you don't own a gun capable of minute of barn groupings. :)

For formal bullseye competition, I respectfully submit that neither is adequate until given a full accuracy treatment. Look for a second hand Clark, Giles, Strahan, or any AMU modified pistol (the latter will be ugly as sin but shoot like an angel). Otherwise you may be looking for a Rock River or Les Baer certified to 2 inches or less. My gun is a 1976 series 70 Gold Cup accurized by Lew Mueller of Billings back in 1980. Hasn't seen a Ransom Rest in 25 years but then it put handloads 3.7 bullseye 200gr H&G #68 into 9/10th of an inch for 10 rounds. It will probably still do so after 20,000+ rounds.

Nick,

You are welcome to try my Marvel Custom Limited 45. My only complaint with the pistol is that it has an amazing glass rod trigger and i would prefer a roll trigger.

I have paired the Marvel Custom, with a Kart 22 conversion and it seems to be a fantastic NRA gun set. If I could only find the time to shoot...

I have had the pleasure of meeting Dr Jim and is advice is quite sound.

We could talk if only you would respond to the phone messages I have left.
I have tried to find an accuracized .45 but no luck.
I am sure that you are looking for a home for your pistol. Maybe it is me.
I would love to try your "Brian Pistol". Maybe it needs some excercise?
Regards

Nick,

I'm not overly inclinded to sell my pistol. I'm giving serious thought to going to Camp Perry next year. There is someone in the Toronto area by the name of Roger Kantanko (not sure of spelling), who might be able to assist you with your current 1911. Jason Spencer of Ottawa did the work on my 1911 Norinco and its fantastic. Admitedly the obly thing Norinco is the frame. At provincials a couple years I ago I shot 187 iron sights and 50yards with it.

As for being poor at returning calls, emails - its true. Between a new house and work the past few months have been tough. I hope you unbderstand its not personal.

Just remembered this. A new national record was set at last years Nationals for the 45 portion of the 2700 with I think a STI Targetmaster. I was not present, but I'm sure a little digging around will reveal the pistol used.

Thanks for the info Brian. I would not want to spoil your trip to Perry. You may keep your pistol. If I get my act together perhaps I will join you.
I will explore other options to obtain the most accuracy from by Kimber Target. I guess it will be practice, practice etc. I was trying to determine whether I was flogging a dead horse. (pistol that is)
I know you are a busy boy. I did say "regards" in closing.
