Scope slipping in rings

So I have a bushnell 3200 mounted on my Tikka t3 in .30-06, not sure what rings I have on it but the scope is slipping inside the rings moving back in fact after being shot. Rings are quite tight, I really can't tighten them anymore and don't want to damage my scope, there is already slight scratches on the scope where the rings have scratched it due to the scope moving back. Has this happened to anyone before? what does everyone reccomend? Do I need better rings? can I coat the inside of the rings with something to make a tighter fit?

thanks,

I've never had a problem with slipping, when the rings were tightened to 15-20 inch lbs. I have heard of guys using powdered rosin you can get at the sports stores to increase friction. The scratches are probably from it moving, not the rings being tightened. What kind of rings are these? I'm using Leupolds on my T3 with success.

I'd replace the rings too, while you are at it.

If the scope is moving "back", maybe its getting banged in a case, or in your cabinet or something. Shooting should move it "ahead".....

What kind of rings / bases are you using? If you decide to change, the Opti-Lock rings and bases are a very solid set up, and the plastic inserts will prevent scope marking like you're getting now.

The drug stores sell a personal item that men sometimes use, made of a very thin, rubberized material. Cut off a band, narrower than the scope rings, and stretch this over the scope where the rings are.
This has been the traditional method of holding scopes for many years.

Make sure there was no oil on the inside of the rings first. A common mistake that we all forget. Use some alcohol to wipe ithe rings and the scope clean and many of your slip issues will go away.
The rest of the suggestions work as well -but may as well start with clean, dry surfaces.

Good point and a good 1st step. Years ago I had a similar problem with a 3-9 Bushnell mounted on a Parker Hale in 308 Norma Magnum. The problem was still there after a good cleaning. What I did try, and I can't recall who suggested it, was to lightly scratch/score the inside of the scope rings, apply a light wipe of fingernail polish, then re-mount and align the scope and tighten. Don't know if it's the 'best' solution but it did work at that point in time.

i agree. by using rosin, condoms, etc you are merely addressing a symptom and ignoring the problem. good rings should not slip, and do not require any adhesives/rubber/etc to hold your scope even on hard recoiling rifles.

Just to clear up my original post just a bit provide some background info etc. here it is.

Rifle was bought new, had a s**tty bushnell on there originally that couldn't handle the recoil optics would blur after a shot, however I still shot a deer with it so +1 to that.

The next year I took it back to the place I bought it and upgraded to the 3200, shot it a handful of times after that don't think I really noticed that the scope had moved, couple weeks ago took it out and by the time 10 rounds went through it the optical adjustments were almost touching the rings so yes I guess it was moving forward not back.

So from the pictures you can see the scratches on one side, so a couple weeks ago I remounted the scope and made sure the rings were really tight, I have still noticed that the scope has moved in the rings though.

As I stated I don't know what type of rings they are, probably just cheapo ones that the gun shop put on when they sold me, I will admit I wasn't up to snuff on types of rings and bases, and I am still not so suggestions are welcome.

cheers,

I have the exact same set up except for the base and ring's. Get rid of the deffective ring's, not worth fixing and worrying about it. Most of my rifle's I go with Leupold bases and rings, on my two Tikka's I went with the Millett Angle-Loc Tikka rings and base package. I liked them better then the Optilock which I find heavy and bulky. Never had any problem's. Good Luck

What model of base and rings for leupold did you go with? I was just on the site and not sure what to go with? where did you get it I am in a bad spot of the country with not much selection and local shops telling me it may be on backorder or a month long wait etc. and charging through the teeth. Any good site sponsors carry bases and rings?

Many years ago I bought a 1964 Sako L61 in 270 calibre. It came complete with Sako rings. It was a good setup, because the rings fit onto a tapered slide, an integral part of the rifle. Looked like a pefect set up.
I mounted a 2 to 7 power Redfield scpe, among the earliest of variable scopes. A problem soon showed. No matter how tight I set the ring screws, the scope moved forward. Of course, I thoroughly cleaned everything, but no help. I tried some makeshift ideas, but didin't like having to do that.
Then, I noticed that Weaver made a base to fit my rifle. The base tapped on to the integral slide and had a little set screw in each base, to hold it there. I put those on, used standard Weaver rings and never had anymore trouble with the scope moving. To this day the rifle has that Weaver set up.
So, just exactly what brand of rings are you calling junk?

Sorry, what I meant is on my Tikka's I went with the Millett Angle-Loc Tikka 1" scope ring and base package, there roughly $40.00 for the blued and $50.00 for silver (base and rings). I went with the Medium. Check Le Baron same page as Optilock right after Sako rifles. You can also go with the Optilock but will pay $70 to $80 for base and $100 to $115 for rings. Not sure about Leupold on newer Tikka. Hope this helps.

ummmmm was that directed at me? Nice story and I am happy your setup worked out for you, I am calling the rings that are on there junk because they obviously aren't working the way they are supposed to and I don't feel like using a pack of rubbers to shim them, I posted on here to ask if anyone has had a problem like this before, I already stated I know #### all about rings and bases and I don't know what brand was on there, so I am asking what is the best and what people recommend, I already called my local gun shop, he is out of Tikka t3 bases in leupold, but told me I could probably get away with a better set of rings on the current bases I have, however I am thinking I should upgrade both cause I would rather not screw around with this setup anymore.
