BEST GMRS radios on the market ????

I am looking to upgrade my 3 year old Cobras with a new set of GMRS radios. I think everyone knows that the advertised distance that they work at is total BullS@@t. However with that being said, what is the best pair of Radios on the Market, and were to I get them??? I don't mind spending alot of money on them, so long as they are worth it. I would prefer handsfree, with a ear piece also, to make things easier while on my ATV.
 
A buddy came back from china with some very powerfull ones apparently theryre army uses after seeing how they work I ordered a pair from his next trip there wattage and batteries are much bigger and are voice activated if your going domestic go with the ones that have a larger battery and higher wattage I'm using some cobras microtalk from the states version they are a lot stronger than the Canadian ones bass pro sells them , they are not csa approved good luck
 
Does Bass Pro in Toronto sell the ones that are not CSA approved??? I will check out the thread about the two way radios, I was'nt aware that there was such a thread.
 
Well, I have a friend who went to the States today to do some shopping, so I gave him the cash and I wrote the Model number down, of a couple different Midland GMRS radios to get for me. I asked him to get me either the Midland GTX 1050 VP4 or the Midland GTX 795 VP4. They are both very similar, and they feature Voice operated headsets, dual power source, Mossy Oak Camo, and most importantly 5 WATTS of Power.

I have a License for a CB Radio already, so I am pretty sure that I am NOT going to be breaking any laws (no matter how ridiculous they are).

Once I get them home today, I will give them a charge and tomorrow I will compare them to my 3 year old Cobras (from Can Tire). I will take them out in the Bush were it means the most to me, and see how much of a improvement in range I actually get.

I will post my results after I give them a test. (unless I totally wasted my money and I feel really embarresed):eek:
 
The 5w ones from the US are the best way to go these days without breaking the bank. They are still crappy in the dense bush, but better then the 2w ones. Some here might give you crap saying they will interfere with emergency services radios etc, but thats BS.

Possibly amateur (ham) radio licence, but that is still limited to the bands allocated to amateur radio. I think that the regulations set for GMRS radios by industry canada apply to everyone due to the fact that they are for everyone.

If you want some real distace, get you ham radio licence! :) just tooting the horn for another hobby of mine!


But I will be following thins thread, b/c I am in the market for some GMRS radios as well ( due to the fact nobody I hunt with is an amateur radio operator)
 
www.mods.dk has a full list of mods for most amateur radios to do general coverage. As long as you use the FRS / GMRS frequencies or what they call the temporary assignment frequencies, you will not interfere with LEO or emergency comms. if you use 469,1125, 469.2625, the only thing there is simplex non emergency service stuff.

Stay away from 430 and lower, only use between 456-470.00. on temporary assignment frequencies. You can get a licence for them if you choose. All
 
I've always sworn by using CB radios as well as my Motorola Radius UHF radios with the main unit in my vehicle as repeater.

Relaying system works great in groups! Keep base unit at camp. :)
 
Yes, is it illegal, yes. However the radios such as the Vx277 has the same internals as it's commercial counterpart. I use a pair for camping etc. on 469.2625 mhz, for which I hold an IC licence. I also use the same radio for some ham stuff too. The only thing that makes it grey is the fact that they are not type approved.

Full auto is "technically" illegal in Canada too. How come illegal firearm activity topics are off limits on CGN, but illegal telecommunication usage is written off here as silly?

There is a reason for radio regulations. It's not silly, and it's not about taxes or a money grab by the govt. It's about safe and orderly use of a dwindling finite radio spectrum. If I had a dollar for every time I had to chase down both malicious, and unintentional interference from non-licensed users. You can't just make up your own frequencies, key the mic, and hope your not causing somebody else interference. It doesn't work that way. If seen surveyors, seismic, and construction guys buy frequency agile radios, dial up random frequencies, and completely shut down a public safety system 30 miles away. They were oblivious to the interference as they were transmitting on the input to the trunked system's control channel. You don't know if your frequency is re-issued to somebody else in the next county. There's a reason why the ERP, antenna height, transmission mode, and geographical boundaries are licensed.

I know every one here gets tired of me harping on this topic, and I apologize for being a dreadful bore. Second guessing Industry Canada is just bad karma. DON'T DO IT!
