Ok

anyone got a good recipe for .40 S&W using Bullseye and DRG cast bullets 180gr RNF? Manual doesn't have anything for lead at that weight.

Thanks

I do not use bullseye in .40 but do shoot the DRG 180 grn lead truncated cone bullet. These bullets are very accurate and work well in my M&P but the DRG lube tends to smoke alot so be careful if the sun is to the side or front and you are shooting fast.

my loads all at 1.125" with the above bullet include 3.7 of 231 and 3.0 of clays both are about 145 PF but the clays "seems" to shoot softer and have a little less smoke. for a major or factory duplicate load try 5.9 to 6.0 of power pistol behind the drg. about 1000 fps or 180 pf.

maybe with good data sheets you can figure a start load for bullseye. i would guess about 3.3 and work up from there watching for pressure signs. Bullseye is very fast powder and may not reach max velocity before you get an over pressure load. Powders like power pistol and AA#7, etc are better powders for a full house .40 load. also try unique as it seems to work in every cartridge.

hope some of this helps

PS put some taper crimp on the reloads as the 180 is a heavy bullet and can move in the case.

Thanks..I found some load data on the back of my Lee Die instructions. Lists 4.2- 4.5gr of bullseye...Found a recipe on handloads.com of 4.3 gr bullseye 1.125" OAL.. It's feeding an M&P .40 as well and the load matches your OAL so I'm going to try 2 loads only 4.2 and 4.3 as I like to load closer to start levels. I use a Lee factory crimp.

Despise the 180.

I really do not like any 180 grain cast or factory bullets for 40. Recoil is almost comparable to to 45acp so what's the attraction? Shoot 45! I have seen more guys with fast misses with the 180 combination than most nines or 45's. My far, far away pal Rick from R&RBullets who now is so freakin far away that I cannot get his Magma Engineering 155grain cast SWC that my tears are hitting the keyboard!
If you must use the unsuitable 180 grain bullet, do not exceed 4.0 grains of Bullseye. You will only increase the recoil. Four grains will work in the M&P, but a softer load that will function is 3.8 or 3.9.
Switch to a much lighter bullet and you will notice a big improvement. I'm not kidding...
