i was wondering about using a gp100 for idpa, i was wondering if anyone had any experience with it and any recommendations as to which holster, speeds loaders etc to use with it?

thanks

I shot IDPA this last week for the first time with my 6" GP100. It went really well and while I didn't shoot all that quickly, the gun was reliable and easy to shoot with 38 special ammo (you'll need to reload to make minor power factor with 38 special or shoot factory 357 mag). If you have the choice, go with the 4.2" gun as it can be used in Canadian and US shoots and will be easier to find a holster for.

I was lent a few safariland comp 3 speedloaders and they were great. I had no problem using them with the factory hogue grip. I wasn't able to find a holster I was happy with that would work for a 6" gun and IDPA so I purchased a piece of leather and made my own. It works well and is legal for IDPA. Most 'competition' style holsters you will find for the 6" GP100 are built for IPSC and will not work for IDPA.

Make sure you check the IDPA rulebook regarding speedloaders, holsters and speedloader holders. There are some very specific rules regarding the equipment you are allowed to use.

If you already have speedloaders, get out there and shoot with what you have. If you are buying new ones, look at the safariland comp 3. They have a spring assist that will push the rounds into the chamber insteady of relying on gravity as well as they have a large handle that is very easy to grab. The HKS and safariland comp 1 and comp 2 all have small knobs on the backs of the loaders that make them difficult to get a hold of when pulling them out of the speedloader holder.

All safariland loaders (comp 1, 2 and 3) release the rounds when the loader bottoms out against the cylinder when inserting the rounds. (push rounds in, hear click, drop loader, close cylinder)

HKS loaders release the rounds when the shooter turns a knob on the back of the loader. They hold the rounds very securely but are more difficult as they require one extra step. (push rounds in, hold cylinder from turning, twist knob, drop loader, close cylinder)

I like the Fobus Holster for the 4.2 Version.

For the Speed Loader ,Brownells has them for 20$ a Piece ,you need version 008.
Where would i find a safariland comp 3 Speed Loader here in Canada and whats the price ?
For IDPA you would need at least 3 of them,i think.

i've been using the 4.2" with a Fobus (yea yea) and 4 HKS speedloaders at least for practice (haven't done any competitions yet). first thing i'd change is the speedloaders - while the HKS are nice and seem well put together, the twist-to-release is a PITA when trying to do fast reloads. i'm also looking for an affordable local(ish) source of the Safariland Comp2 or even Comp3 loaders.

i've got nylon Raine speedloader pouches, two duals (so that's 2+2=4), got them on eBay for a pretty good price and they fit nicely. small, individual velcro flaps, can tuck the flaps behind the belt too if you wanna leave them "exposed" (though probably best to train with the flaps closed)

there's a place in town (Ottawa) that can get the Comp3 for around $20 each, or the Comp2 for around $13 each. i talked to a buddy and while the Comp3 are nice they're kinda big so they may not clear the grip and depending on the pouch you use, they may be too tall. he says the springs get weak over time (which doesn't sound like they should). but price & size made me buy the Comp2.

you can order a Fobus RUGP on eBay easily. i think it comes to around $30 after shipping. most are paddle, but a few are belt. i have the paddle, and it works fine, but i may try a belt version OR go for an IWB from someplace else.

Anyone know who has the 4.2" gp100 in stock (stainless)? Been looking for one, but have only been able to find them in 6" barrel configuration.

Talk to 6gm6, he runs one.

Ditto. I saw his. Fobus has come a long way! I believe he ordered it directly from Fobus and got it very cheap.

I really like shooting mine, balances really well, quick on target. I'm running full house 357 loads and that grip reduces the felt recoil. I was going to swap out the front sight but have just painted it pumpkin orange. Now that's hi-viz.

I tried running a leather holster first but have picked up the fobus it was under $30 to my door direct from Israel. The rest of my holsters are blade-techs but this new fobus appears to have "borrowed" a few "ideas" from blade tech and blackhawk.

I have both hks and safariland comp 2 speed loaders. The comp 2's are the way to go to get your reload time down. I'm holding them in a couple leather gun show specials.

Oh and bashawsports has them at 599 blued :p

that's f'n hilarious! you did the same pumpkin-orange paint job that i did. dollarama paint? yeah, it's cheap and bright and doesn't use up a lot.

same holster. same speedloaders. though i use Raine speedloader pouches.

and no matter what, i like shooting the Ruger more than the Glock.
