$20000 For a 1911????

"the rich stay rich by behaving as if they are poor, and the poor stay poor by acting as if they're rich""

You obviously have limited experiences with the truly wealthy... ;) There are those that genuinely have more money than they can spend in a lifetime. In some circles (not mine) $20,000 is a nice dinner for four in a "decent" restaurant...

So, I get that it's rare, and old. Is that it? Is it a superior firearm as well? Had they gone ahead full speed, there'd be thousands just like it. I know lots of old things that are one of a kind in the world, that aren't worth bending over to pick up if you drop them. I realize the value is whatever someone will pay for it, Canuck44, you said you'd buy it if you had the lotto money, I'm just wondering what about it, makes it worth that much. ArtyMan, have you had it for long? I presume it's not a shooter, at that price.

You make an iteresting point.... had WWI gone into 1919 or even 1920 likely the NAA 1911 would've been in full production and there would be thousands produced. Just as there might've been other contract 1911's as well, Winchester comes to mind, and Savage [although they did make some replacement slides for the war effort already] & likely others as well.....

GEEEESE,
I guess I never should have chopped that one up into an IPSC gun for that guy 20 years ago.....

I was going to post my 2 cents on this subject as I initially had the same reaction to the 20k price tag.

1.) I understand that only 100 or so were made. I get that. It's rare. Very rare.
2.) It's Canadian war-time history.

My beef? It has no actual war-time use. They never were used.
To me it loses it's significance as a "war time" item, however - it is the rarest 1911.

I'm on the fence. I wouldn't buy it - but I totally see why people would. Interesting to see what it goes for - and if there is the documentation to back it up - otherwise it could be a fake ( ***im not suggesting in anyway that it is! It's just common sense when dropping 20k on something...)

I still don't get it. I guess that I'm too young to appreciate the historical significance behind it.

It's not that you are too young... it's just that you are not a serious 1911 collectors, that one specific gun is not the one missing in your collection.

With these piece, if someone wants one... the problem is not the $$, but when will one be available for sale.

I've seen two of them, and don't recal ever seeing one for sale. But I have to admit, I'm kind of surprise someone would even bother listing it on CGN. I thought it would have went from one collector directly to another collector.

Why doesn't it shock me that people that would consider owning a NP29 can't see the value of a true piece of 1911 history?

An interesting perspective.....

I will say, in my own case, I do have an acute appreciation for all aspects of the NAA 1911 [hence my CGN user name... ;)] I also actually own 2 Norinco NP-29's.... :D :p

Zing!

Hmm, I think I'm going to buy that pistol. Does anyone want to buy a boat, two 4runners, a 69 VW notchback, a '30 Ford sedan, my wife's new bike, my son's lego, my daughter's dog, my dog, my wife's Rolex (bought new in Mexico this winter), a bunch of fishing tackle, and my modest collection of full stocked rifles?

Or you can sell only half of your stuff and get this one instead for only $9195.00;)

I had a chance to buy a Singer 1911 about 25 years ago when I lived in the US. At that time the price tag on it was 4500.00 and I hummed and hawwed for about 2 days but I couldn't scrap up enough money. Wonder what it would be worth now?

I was thinking that...Maybe a scare tactic to motivate them. The thought of a NAA landing in some redneck`s reck room is quite amusing. of course it would have to be a well off redneck.

Why would someone pay over $1 million for a hockey jersey? Is it in some way superior to a jersey you can by for $100? Probably not but it has some historical significance, hence to some people, it is worth the money.

I certainly can't afford it, but it is the ultimate 1911 pistol and if I had a seemingly endless pile of coin, I'd be all over it.

Oh, and I agree with the poster who said these things were purpose-built. I'd definitely bring it to the range and put at least a mag or two through it, if nothing else, just to piss off the purist collectors :D

I'd have to sell my car, wait a minute, that's kind of tempting - then I could get a beat up pick up, I'd be the first guy in history to take a gun to the range in a vehicle that was worth less than the gun.
