Just found out the govt released 50 wolves in my area:mad:.
What should I know about them?
I live on a farm/ranch and work outside all the time:eek:

I know some of them will come right up to a cow moose call.

I've unknowingly set up camp the the vicinity of a pack a couple of times.

It sounds awesome; but even then you'll rarely see them.

They were raised somewhere by peoples so i guess they will not be afraid of humans.
I also own cattle, should i be worried?
I`m in South Alberta, Prairie with no trees.

Yes they will kill calves. Carry a gun in the veh. and shoot any you can. Even a miss serves as education and they might keep clear of your place. I may have to come down. Pheasants & wolf, a nice combo hunt.

Keep your eyes open and if you are lucky, some day you may catch a glimpse of them.

If you are lucky is right!

any coyote problem you might have had is over. wolves will kill em on sight.I like that about them.

How is the coyote population around there? Are they a problem?

I'm interested to know more about the release and can't find anything on the news. When/where/why did they release them? Why do you think they were raised by humans? The relocations I am familiar with the wolves were trapped wild and moved after a vet check.

As far as being concerned for personal safety, I wouldn't give it a second of thought- I can only come up with two in all of Canada in the last 30ish years. Will they eat livestock? Pass the ketchup...... :p

When they shipped the BC and Alberta wolves to Yellowstone Park, what was that, twenty years ago now?, I thought that was only about fifty wolves.
It took months of preperation and considerable time to catch them.
It seems odd that they would suddenly ship 50 wolves to such an unlikely spot as southern Alberta.

To keep the Elk population down on CFB Suffield,

Thanks y2k.
CFB Suffield, federal jurisdiction and Environment Canada.
Makes a bit more sense now.
Interesting experiment if they truly have released some/lot of wolves on the base. I hope there is a mechanism in place to compensate bordering ranchers for stock loss?

There’s some sort of wildlife refuge on that base controlled by Environment Canada.
They will not allow hunting on base property, unlike camp Wainwright, due to common live ammunition practice. Curiously though, they didn’t feel there was a threat from unexploded munitions when they held a big recreational cattle drive across the base a couple years ago.

There is without question world class elk and antelope galloping around at CFB Suffield.
