Is there noticeable difference in ballistics?
Same question regards to recoil.

I have a 270 - is a 270WSM that much better that I will notice the difference? Or should I just stick with what I know works

Thanks
Marty

If you already have a 270, there isn't a lot of sense buying a 270 WSM. The WSM will only give you about 200 fps better velocity with any given bullet weight, which really doesn't make much difference while hunting.

Recoil wise Rifle Wt Lbs Recoil

270 Win. (150 at 2900)8.0 17.0.270 WSM (150 at 3000)8.018.9

At 100 yards the difference in velocity of standard Win 150 gr powerpoint would be approx 300 Ft Sec faster and energy 500 ft lbs higher for the 270 WSM over the 270 Win.

In my eyes there is no advantage in going to a WSM over the "standard" .270 Win.

The .270 Win. is enough for all North American game, except Bison in BC (due to the regs) and it is not the ideal Grizzly cartridge either - but then again niether is the WSM.

With 130gr bullets at +3100 fps the regular version is a great cartridge for deer, sheep, goats and, if you use a good bullet, is fine for elk and moose too. There are lots of high quality used rifles in the standard version and ammo/brass is plentiful.

Best part about the .270, one of the main reasons I chose it over many others, is that you can get it at every outdoors store, Walmart, and Canadian Tire in the country, no matter how small the town.

i have valid reasons for selling my .270 and getting a .270 wsm, although my .270 dialed out and shot well to 700 yrds it was out of gas well before that

i got into longer range shooting, or trying to wring out as much capability out of a cartridge/gun/scope combo that i could...the .270 wsm gave me another 150 yrds and now i have the efficiency i'm after...

the 140 federal accubonds that mine likes go 3160 fps giving me pbrz of 262 yrds and pbr to around 311 yrds....with that zero a leupold with target knob and 1/4 moa clicks will crank me around to a little over 800 yrds in one 60 click rotation of the knob, and my velocity doesn't drop below the nosler recommended 1800 fps until about 750 yrds at my elevations....so it all seems to fit together perfectly so i order up a kenton speed dial knob and wind data i fit under butler creek eye piece cap...very slick in hunting situations

plus it fits a short action and i'm into packing up the mountains now so light is important my sako a7 with talleys and leupy mk4 4.5-14x40 goes 7 lb 3.5 oz and its 5 shot sub-moa and it dials up and hits awesome, just had it to range for pre-season check and did a bit over 4" at 545 yrds (500m) gong for 4 shot confirmation

i didn't just get one because it was cool...i did alot of math before choosing it and also lots of reading so i'm glad its hip as another factor in my decision was its likely one wsm to outlast all others although i suspect the 300 wsm will also stick around for just as long

not that i need to shoot that far, i just like setting my gear up to its potential...just in case

so long live the .270 wsm....there is a dang good reason to own one imo, a 20% stronger .270 can't be a bad thing ;)

I was within 75 fps of that with 140 gr Hornady out of a 22" barrel in the plane jane .270 Win. (Remington Mountain Rifle). That is a 2.5% difference in velocity.

How many shells do you actually shoot in a season? maybe 5? 10 if your a shooting a semi and firing hell Marys. That includes the 2-3 for sighting in before the season.

Oh boy, what to say about this?

I don't reload, but when i thought about getting into it had a few guys recipes out of their tikkas/sakos and they were way hotter than what i'm shooting...into the 3300's so tit for tat pretty sure we're still talking at least 20% difference. By sounds of it a lot of guys talking about ammo availability in this thread so guessing more than a few here don't reload either. I specifically try to avoid reloading on principle of being different.

I bowhunt like a mofugga also...so there are only so many aspects i can get into and still have a life....luckily for me with todays modern ammo's and a decent selection of well built/accurate firearms that finding sub-moa performance isn't that difficult....this made my decision to not reload so much easier as i don't benchrest or compete...i hunt and moa of coyote to 800 yrds is good enough for me.

Whats case capacity difference in percentage again? When i researched this out a couple years ago running every number you could run it was approx. 20% faster, hit same energy levels 20% further, all around it was just 20% more cartridge...recoil too i'm sure....i think it ran between 20 and 25% but lower 20's most of the time in my comparisons.

Here we go, quick google and first link i opened.....case capacity full of water 67.1 grs .270, 80.1 for wsm grains....67.1 x1.20 = 80.52....then right below that in the same google we get 130 gr hornady seated to proper overall length and got 63 grains into the .270 and 75 grains in the wsm...63 x 1.20 = 75.6...i believe the guy was still using water to demonstrate case capacity differences?

So apples to apples its a .270 plus 20 points ;)

i just ran factory federal 140 ab data on my program with my own bc and elevations with their 2950 and 3200 fps published velocities...and seeing where the 1800 fps line is for the nosler recommended minimum impact velocity for the bullet to do its job still.....the wsm runs out at 800 yrds and the regular .270 at 650 yrds....almost 25% when looking at it this way....although published velocity differences are only 8.5% difference....to me the wsm is at least 20% more cartridge and gives me closer to 25% more range than the .270 did
