Hello
Recently acquired a 1871 Remington Rolling Block in 50/70 with all the ear marks of a NY Militia Contract, but no Cartouche is present on the stock. This one appears unaltered (accept for the black paint) and has 165 Stamped in the stock like a rack number. I have found what appears to be a serial and assembly number on the sides of the tangs under the stock. There is no evidence that the stock has been sanded or switched. Were some of these sold under private treaty?
take care
