Alberta - Is RAMP Dead?

Apparently, there has been some recent discussions that the funding for RAMP (Paid Hunting) is under some intense scrutiny. Given some recent and onerous cuts to other department budgets, the pilot and its funding is a pretty sore point with many MLA's who are unsupportive of spending taxpayer dollars to landowners for hunting access.

Good job to all those that continued to oppose this misguided effort.

Stay tuned!

I am sure that if there were any truth to this the "Voice of Alberta's Hunters, Anglers and Trappers" would have prepared an article on it.

They have such a finger on the pulse of all things outdoors you know.

I also take my hat off to those who continue to oppose this behind the scenes.

Logically it doesn't make a lot of sense that the govt would continue to fund such a liability under the tighter fiscal constraints.

I hope you are right Moon.

I'm just posting information that was passed on to me. I did have a chance meeting with a few Conservative MLA's earlier in the week and they assured me that things in Alberta are going to get a lot better. We can only hope but I am optimistic about the demise of RAMP.

I hope by "get a lot better" they don't mean no more random camping or banning of ATV's.

I got the feeling that many in the Conservative government recognized that they had gotten away from their core values and mandate and needed to smarten up. It wasn't discussed, but I think the popularity of the WRA has them rethinking the way the people want them to govern and manage the Province.

To be clear, the information I received was not direct from these MLA's, although it was discussed. It certainly seems to bit of a "hot potato" topic in the Legislative Assembly as of late and has MLA's scratching their heads.

I am very hopeful that we will hear of the demise of RAMP in the next three or four weeks. I'm guessing that RAMP might still be in play for the 2010 season but that is only a guess.

Suka - I agree with your comments.

I am a little confused here Moon. It is dead but may go for the 2010 season? I don't get it.
Details to the devil, I would be glad to see it go now or next year.

BTW since I am only an occasional reader and rarely post I don;t get all the references made. What is this business about the voice of sportsmen and stuff?? And what is this about roandom banning of camping and ATV's?? I must have missed some news while on vacation back east this summer.

It is a tiring, long running pissing match between a number of board members, another forum, and a magazine.

It has been the demise of many good discussion on this subject. Once a thread starts down this road there is nothing good that can come from it. Personal insults, name calling, etc. are par for the course.

Can we lock this thread before it starts all over again? Oh, wait, I see Enough Gun and Guido have already started with the personal attacks.

Sad state of affairs.

Here is a link to a survey from SRD that was sent to me.. Be careful when filling it out as, as usual, they have worded it very badly. Thankfully, there is room at the end for comments. Whether they'll be read or not will remain a mystery.

Schlep - If this makes any sense and as I understood the conversation: There may have been a budget allocation in existence for fiscal 2010 to support RAMP and there likely would be some consideration to participating landowners and hunters for 2010 in anticipation of RAMP. I think that is where it gets a bit tricky.

I think the banning of random camping and ATV's refers to public lands and also includes some pretty onerous firearm or "weapons" restrictions to the same. The Provincial government has a questionairre out asking for opinions or input on public land use. I don't have it in front of me at the moment but perhaps someone else could provide the link.

ETA - I see the link has been provided.

Edited to further add - The following is the link provided to the proposed regulations:

It's a long read that is somewhat short of definitions. I think that has most of us concerned.

I spoke today with an individual that is pretty close to the RAMP pilot. He told me that as of yesterday and to the best of his knowledge there is NO funding for RAMP this year. Apparently Mel Knight believes that there are better uses for the money within the hard-hit SRD budget. Will Ted Morton throw some more money at RAMP appears to be the million dollar question. I do not think it would be very popular.

dumbdumb question, but what is RAMP ????

http://www.srd.alberta.ca/FishingHuntingTrapping/RecreationalAccessManagementProgram/Default.aspx

It's a program that allows hunters on private land basically, with some access rules in place. Some say that it is the same as paying land owners for access to their land (they are paid a certain amount by the government, depending on how many hunters access their land.)

I believe it was only in WMUs 108 and 300 where the program was tried. We hunted a few properties in 108 last year. Bascially pull up to a check in station, fill out a card, and go hunting.

:bangHead:

It would have been nice to have full opposition to this crap from the start.
Maybe the former SRD minister may have listened a bit better. there wouldn't have been a waste of tax payers money for the last few years.
I think there was too much, lets wait and see, give it a chance, attitude.
