I'm thinking about getting a dedicated coyote rifle, and I have 3 in mind. The Rem. 700 SPS Varmint, R700 VTR, and the Savege 10XP Predator package. I want it to be in 223 for the cheap ammo/availability.I woul proboly put a Cabelas Tactical multi turret scope on it so that it can be set for 223 55 grain. Any suggestions, warnings, or ideas are apreaciated. I have 800 to spend on a rifle and 200 for a scope, a bipod will come later.
Thanks for any input.

I'm not a fan of heavy barreled coyote rifles. Been there, done that, no advantage to them. It's not like you're smoking 15 coyotes in 5 minutes and need that heavy barrel. Have you taken a look at other options with a sporter weight barrel? Also I would adjust your budget towards the scope a bit more.

check out the savage modle 25 light varmit.comes in 223 for around 700 bucks which will free up a little more funding for the scope or a bi-pod. cabelas canada has the lite varmit listed for 599.99 and the lite varmit with thumbhole stock for 649.99 plus taxes/shipping.

How about a Stevens 200 (lots of ways to upgrade later). That way you can spend more money on a decent scope like a Falcon Menace (4-14x) and still be close to your $1000 limit.

How did I forget about the Stevens? Thats a good idea, lots of more money for a scope/bipod. The reason I listed the SPS Varmint is because it comes in left handed. I dont want wood because I feel bad painting it. What do people think of the scope that comes with the savage package? what about a Nikon Coyote Special scope? Anybody got expeirince with them yet?

Ok here's my take on it 223 perfect 22/250 perfect depends on the area's you hunt. Are you a caller if so you got gear to carry, pad to sit on, shooting sticks or bypod ecaller decoy so a heavy barreled varmint rifle is extra weight. If you are just sitting and running dogs then i can see the heavy barreled gun but you really dont't need it cause you aren't gonna shoot alot at a running coyote .My choice is a sporter weight rifle that shoots under an inch and has a clip the first shot is gonna be the the best shot and if you go with the 223 get one with a 8 or 9 twist that can shoot a heavy bullet as well as a light bullet my savage likes 40 gr and 60 gr just my 2 cents ps. im a south paw to

I would look at a Tikka T3 Lite, that is what I used for a coyote rifle and I love it... I agree with all the other guys, get a lighter gun, heavy barrels are for the range, they suck to lug around the field. Best advice I was ever given when it comes to scopes is this, take it for what it's worth; "you should spend as much on your scope as you do on your rifle, the gun is only as accurate as the scope"... cheers

Ruger MKII M77 stainless in synthetic stock, leupold 3-9x40 ... easily purchase for your price range ... lightweight, rustproof and good optics ... plenty for a coyote killer I would think ... ;)

+1 for the Stevens (mine is in .223...)

I was planning on a savage model 40 varmint single shot in .22 hornet for coyotes around here. MY situation might be different than yours, though, as i'm not expecting to ever get a shot further than 200 yards. As for a scope, i've got a bushnell twophy 3-9x40 sitting downstairs just waiting for a gun to go on :S

I use a Ruger Target Mini-14 and it works wonders for "me". 80% of the dogs i smash are on the run anyways and the heavy barrel give me a steady swing and follow up shots are what make the difference because lets face it by the time you get off a second shot from the bolt action that dog has already made 50-100 yards further... Personally if i was going to get a bolt action for coyotes there are alot better choices that the .223, my suggestion would be a .22-250 or even a .243.

I really like the Howa Axiom, and laminated thumb hole varminter.

X2 on the CZ527. Mine has a leftie action and a set trigger. Shoots like a hot damn and I love the Minimauser action. Weighs the same as my 22 version. I load for it too so I get to shoot it a lot. Got a Nikon Buckmaster 6-18 on it too so really good visuals. Keeping this one. Now if I could just get ahold of a spot with lots of them there little hole diggers....

Ive hunted coyotes for years now. Ive shot Tikas, Remingtons, Savage, Rugers....you name it. The one thing I found out is that if you do alot of walking a heavy BBL rifle sucks, brand doesnt really matter much.
I also like a rifle with a clip just incase I see one in the pasture and can quickly pop it in jump out and shoot.

Cheers!!
