Armco-izing a Norinco

I think any competent gunsmith could probably do it, but not at the price Gunnar is offering it (Basically included in the pistol price, for a bit more than most are selling the pistol).

Although I don,t speak by experience, I read a lot of good thing about Gunnar (Armco), he seems to be well known for his 1911 work.

Gunnar doesn't do anything any other good 'smith or 1911 afficianado couldn't do, what he does is do it for a better price. If you send your gun off be prepared for a long wait with little to no communication.

I don't even think Gunnar does much of that work, I believe he's got an apprentice polishing the Norks and most of the newer Norks don't need much polishing.....

I would see that as a good thing. We need more apprentices. Espically gunsmiths. I hope to not be done shooting guns when Gunnar is retired.

I think it's a great thing as well, and as long as people trust the Armco shop with Gunnar overseeing quality control then it really doesn't matter who's doing what...

I haven't read much from Gunnar lately but I seem to recall a few years back mention of an apprentice.

Armco does offer great value on the Norinco 1911's and takes away the lemon factor and saves having to use the Ironclad Guarantee (Marstar)

I like working on guns and will save a bit and go with the Ironclad Guarantee that Marstar offers, if it's a complete lemon it will get traded back.

I'd use Armco for milling a slide for sights since or re finishing but I'd have to check their turnaround time compared to other 1911 smiths in Canada.

It would be nice to hear from Gunnar if he can find some time......and find out how things are going up North these days.

I just bought a Norinco from Marstar, who are some other 1911 smiths, if armco is going to have such a long turn around time I may send it some where else

Sent my N30 nickel about a week ago. Gunnar said about a month and a half, considering how rough this thing was, how crappy the sights were and the 9lb trigger pull, Ill wait. Local gunsmith said he can't do the job without replacing some of the Norc parts, Gunnar can.

Thing of it is, every smith is different in their approach and "touch" when it comes to certain guns. 1911's are definitely one of those guns. So two smiths may actually tune the same pistol in different ways, one may use/modify existing parts, the other may use off-the-shelf replacements he thinks are better suited. Ultimately there are so many different ways to improve a 1911, I'm certain you can get the same results but the question is how much money and labour is involved with a particular shop. A Nork straight from Armco is already worked-over, the work itself is a known quality to many shooters here and the cost is worked in to the price up front.

I'd say for a cheap beater or project that you want to do yourself, buy from wherever is cheapest. If you want a 1911 that'll shoot reasonably straight without being too pricey, the Armco option is a nice one to have.

Since your in Ontario, ship it down to RK Custom/Dark International. He is very well know for 1911 work, being a good guy and having good prices.

Cheers

I'd say getting a 1911 tuned via Armco is well worth the wait, if there is one.

NAA.

The trigger job alone on the Armco Nork is worth the price he charges for the package, zero take up, 3 1/2 lbs let off (like a light switch), and an almost imperceptible bit of travel after. This with stock Nork guts and no adjustable trigger. One of the best triggers I've ever felt, regardless of the cost of the gun, or the trigger job. Also still sweet after 5,000+ rounds.

Is this a specific set of mods that Gunnar alone is capable of doing?

Ya its called getting Gunnard, He`ll take your gun and then ignore you for a year and then when you ask WTF is up he will accuse you of attacking his wife....... :stirthepot2:
