I just bought a S&W 686 and I just want to know the cheapest load that I can make for both 38 and 357.
I will mainly be using this for plinking and not for any kind of competition.
Pls. let me know...thanks.

.38 Spl case, 158gr cast lead alloy (FN, RN, SWC, SWCHP), WW 231 (4.0-4.6gr)

You can load a 148gr WC with even less WW 231 (about 2.7-3.0 gr), but it's much less versatile (IMO).

Get a pound of Bullseye, a bag of 000 buckshot, a thousand small pistol primers, and go directly to your loading bench. :)

Hi Ted
I am not trying to hijack this thread but I am just getting into reloading myself. Why the bag of 000 buck shot? I am i correct in assuming this is for casting? I have never heard of this before. Can you use any size buck shot for casting?

Thank you for this insightful information. I will be using it my self to reload my .38spl.

OP, contact Ben Hunchak for a box of cast bullets and go from there. I load light .44 Mag loads for $0.20/round with Ben's bullets and you should be able to do it for around 50-60% of that price in .38/.357.

Just for your figurin', 500-.358" 158gr.fp pb go for $40 plus shipping (no Tax) so that works out to..... let's see.... gotta get my calculator........I was never good at cypherin'.....

I cast and have figured I am casting my 358 bullets for about 1.5 cents/bullet. Someone gave me some Win 231, so I figure I can shoot the 38 cheaper than my 22 right now.
