The Great Purchasing Debate

Since you have now revealed that you live in the east, I can tell you the SKS are cheaper here than what most people quote on this site. I got mine for 189$ and it is super clean. I saw the same thing in Victoria for 289$!

Lever Arms in Vancouver have been selling SKS for $199 for a long time now, with a crate of ammo it is 350, show me where else you can get it that cheap? And there is no difference in black-silver bolt laminate or not.

In general I live by the motto "you get what you pay for". Funny thing is speaking with the guy from Frontier Firearms he told me the same thing about the SKS. He said it's an inexpensive fun gun but non comparable to the Ruger Mini 14 Target because they're for different things.

Anyways I put a layaway on 2 with the Hogue stocks. Now I just need my PAL :)

My next gun will be an SKS to mess around with but I'm pretty confident with my purchase. I'll update when I receive them and bring mine to the Range.

You're going to buy two Mini 14's for your first two guns? Why not just buy one and then get something different, or get that SKS instead of the second Mini 14, the savings could buy you lots of ammo for both. Don't get me wrong, I see nothing wrong with owning duplicates of any gun(hoping to have multiple M14's at some point), but I don't plan on getting a second of any gun until I have at least 5-7 different guns already(exception if I find a deal that is too good to pass up). If black rifles are your thing maybe think about an SR22 or VTR as well for a second gun, you can shoot a ton of .22lr ammo for much cheaper than the .223 your Mini 14's will be eating. Just some more food for thought.

LOL, sorry if I didn't clarify. 1 will be mine and the other will be my father's. He had absolutely no time to research so basically he told me look around and whatever you get, get one for me too.

I might be uninformed at times but i'm not stupid. For sure MY next gun will be either an SKS or a 10/22 with the SKS more in favor.

Ha! I was wondering if I read that wrong, didn't seem logical. I just paid for my first gun this afternoon(M14), after that a .22lr of some kind, then I think I'll pick up an SKS too. Well anyway, have fun shooting your Mini 14 when it arrives, I'm jealous, I won't be shooting my new purchase until probably end of Sept./early Oct. as I don't take my PAL course till next Thurs.

Here's an old fool's unsolicited opinion. First long gun - some reasonably priced bolt .22 RF. You will learn to shoot with it, and long before 1100 rounds of surplus 7.62X39 get downrange, not hitting your target will get old. Can you learn to shoot with an SKS and 1100 rounds of surplus ammo? I guess. A few million comblock draftees did. Will you? Come to any range and see for yourself. You be the first! (The differnce is that range officer *** ogre with his foot on your jewels if you squint, jerk, or flinch!)

Even a nice little 10/22, which will hit where you point it, and allow you to learn to shoot, will probably become a projectile projector, emptying the wee mag as fast as possible, with occasional holes in target. A generalization you say/ Yup. Based on seeing a lot of younger fellows show up at the range for part of a summer, blast through their allotment of 1100 rounds, or 880, or whatever the deal de jour was, and then never seeing them at a range again. Or, seeing army or air cadets brought up on competitive shooting, buy a couple of long guns and proceed to shoot regularily for life. (Or as much of their life as I was around to observe.)

Sorry.. but while I'm not a rifle expert by any means.. I do know what a limited budget is.

the SKS hands down is a massive value compared to others.. esp as a 1st rifle. No arguments can touch it since you can get one damn near the price of a typical norinco 22lr >:p

Minis are great but not sure it is great as a first gun. Anyway, I have a .22lr kit for the Mini 14 which you will hardly or never find in Canada. Comes with 2 mags and works flawlessly. I will probably never use it cause I have so many 22's. PM me if interested.
