I'm looking at a Win 70 chambered in 25WSSM. Is this a good target cartrige or was it designed primarily for hunting? My first choice would be .223. How does it compare in terms of recoil, accuracy etc?

Thanks

Not a particularly good target cartridge.I'd take the .223 over it any day just due to the amount of data availiable with all kinds of powders and bullets.

The whole combination leaves much to be desired as a target rig. Really poor match bullet choices in .257 cal, poor brass choices, somewhat poor action choice as well.

All-in-all, the super short line never realy amounted to much from a "precision" perspective. Now... open that puppy up to 6.5mm and you have some potential, but there are far better choices.

The .25 WSSM is in a different league then the .223, the .25 is a very fast, flat shooting, hunting rifle, more suited to deer and Antelope hunting, possibly some varmint hunting although prolly considered overkill. The down side would be barrel wear makes it not suitable for a target rifle, as well as noise/blast, and increased cost of ammo both reloading and certainly factory ammo. The .223 is a varmint cal. that can double as a target cal. including long range with the fast twist and very long bullets, factory ammo for varmints and playing around is comparatively inexpensive as is reloading, barrel wear should be less as would noise/blast and recoil. The .223 is not a big game cartridge, regardless of what some on here say. So, two very diff. cart. for very diff. purposes.

Personally I would stay away from all of the WSSM. Looks like Winchester/Browning has discontinued them. Lord knows how much longer ammo will be available.

If you reload buy lots of brass and you are good to go.

The 223 Rem is a great cartridge for varmint and target.

The 25 WSSM recoils with approx 13.8 ft/lbs of energy where the .223 Rem recoils with approx 3.9 ft/lbs so about 3.5 times more recoil than a 223 Rem.

If you can buy it cheap enough, the action would be usable but you would have to put some money into it. I'd pass. Regards, Bill
