I am sorta new to guns and I am a bit frustrated. I have bought several guns and I am seem to have problems seeing throgh a scope. At first i started with cheaper scopes but I just recently bought a Bushness Elite 3200 5-15X40. I have it mounted on my Savage Mako 17HMR. The problem I seem to always have it that I really hjave to hunt around a LOT to get a good view through the scope. I have to squint, move my head around and I finally find the sweet spot and take a shot. But, even at only 50 yards and zoomed at 15X it seems I have problems getting the crosshair on target. Just a slight movement and the scope goes black or I see a large moving circle. Hope I don't sound like an idiot. Is there a "Using scopes for dummine" section? LOL

My guess is that you have the scope mounted too far back (ie close to your eye). Are you seeing a lot of black and then eventually finding the image as a small circle floating around in the black? If so, I'm right. Best way to determine the proper placement for the scope is as follows:

- Secure the scope in the rings but only tight enough so that the scope doesn't slide around.
- Close your eyes and mount the rifle
- Look through the scope - if you see black ring around the image the scope is too far back.
- Without moving your head push the scope slightly forward or back, depending on what needs doing
- Lower the rifle, close your eyes, remount the rifle and open your eyes to look through the scope. Depending on the way the image moves, repeat the steps of adjusting, and remounting until you can mount the rifle with your eyes closed, open them and see perfectly through the scope.

Improper scope mounting is a classic noob goof-up. It ain't exactly intuitive.

Adjust your eye relief. Move your head fore and aft slowly. You will find a point were the whole picture fills the eye piece fully. (You will lose the tunnel view)
You will then need to adjust the scope on the rings, moving forward or back, to fit you when you hold the gun in your most comfortable shooting position.

EDIT
I see BUM beat me to it

Howdy
If you zoom out to the minimum zoom, you will have a bigger "window" where everything is in focus the less the zoom. Try shooting at 5x zoom until it gets more comfortable. You could also try taping something soft (a sock etc) to your stock so your cheek sits higher so you can rest your cheek on the stock and have everything be in focus. With practice, you'll go to the same spot (almost) every time and there is a lot less adjustments needed.

Wow. How easily this problem was fixed! When I bought my guns they were all bore sighted and the shop installed the scope. I just figured they knew the optimum spot to mount it. Now I know it is different from user to user! I moved the scope forward almost 1.5 inches and also tried different zooms. i see now that the lower zoom is much easier to focus on. i just figured "Why would I not zoom all the way in?". Thanks guys. My eyes feel better and I cant wait to adjust my M77 Hawkeye and 10/22!

This confuses most people. Well, most people I take shooting anyway. I just adjust down to 3 on the 3-9x hunting scopes I usually get friends to shoot. It's a lot more forgiving, and less "shaky" as well for newer shooters.

Glad it is working for you, so many things to learn in this sport!

The Mako is a very odd stock design, I had one for a short period of time as I too could not get my face near enough to any scope I tried on the damn thing. your problem is with the rifle stock. FS

Don’t beat yourself up over it. Most new people I have shown how to shoot always ask why it seems so effortless for myself and other experienced shooters to acquire a target. One person commented on how we can see a Coyote and not long after bailing out of the truck being able to squeeze a shot off and hit the mark. It takes time until you get your muscle memory trained.

When you are adjusting your scope to your eye, you should have it on full zoom. Some scopes the eye relief is reduced as the magnification increases. Crank it up to 15 and adjust it until you see a full circle.
