Just found out that it's now legal to hunt with Air guns in Quebec. The catch, it has to be at least 1000 fps. Ugh! I have my ultra accurate R9 that shoot religiously. It does 800 fps with heavies. What do guys recommend as an accurate .177 Air Rifle over 1000 fps for hunting?

Kinetic energy equals mass times velocity squared, for most purposes mass is the same as weight. I would suggest you try a depleted uranium pellet in the rifle you have and I would not be surprised if it had more smack than the 1000fps using lead.................something to think about?????????????:D

I thought about it and I was wrong please accept my apologies...............:D

Stupid, stupid stupid....when will they learn that energy produced is more important than calibre or speed. Technically, someone could go hunting with their .177 pellet rifle that would be good for squirrels, maybe rabbits at not too far a distance, but not something like a benjamin maurauder .25 :( The numbers don't lie, but it's once again people that have no clue making the laws. look:

.177 RWS hobby 7.0 gr @ 1000fps= 15.5 ft/lbs of energy at the muzzle.
.22 JSB exact 15.9 @ 800 fps= 22.6 ft/lbs energy
.25 H&N barracudda 31 gr @ 700fps= 33.7 ft/lbs energy.

But by the law, you can't use your .25, or any .25, or most .22s :S

Lol forgot the original question :) I was looking at a "magnum" .177 air rifle a while back, and finally settled on the winchester 1100 xsu sidelever, which apparently shoots up to 1300 fps with pba ammo. I'd be using some jsb exact heavies though, and keeping it at around 900 or so i think.

i have a Gamo Hunter Extreme .177 what a tack driver it is factory rated at 1650fps using gamo raptor pba pellets and 1250fps using leads i have used both, the raptor at 5.1 grains(sound like a 22 long going off)and beeman kodiaks 10.6 grains.have tried various grains and other brands crossman, rws etc.
what i have found the gamo raptors and beeman kodiaks are what it likes shooting 1/2" to 3/4" groups at about 40yards the raptors will go wild the odd time but was surprised how accurate they are

How is it worded? Does it require a air rifle that shoots at 1000 fps, or one rated by the manufacturer at 1000fps or better?

Maybe a request for some clarification on that, channeled up through the Consevation Officers, or whoever will be doing the enforcement.

If they want velocity in real life, most of the 'rated' airguns will fail unless used with very light pellets (no energy retention, poor accuracy, etc, problems) but if 'rated' is all they want,, then you can pick and choose the pellets that work best, though they will like as not, be slower.

You have a very good long range air rifle,as they are historicaly very accurate,as yet I have not seen a 1000 air rifle that is a tack driver and that what it takes for hunting John

I have a Gamo varmint hunter rated at 1200 fps with PBA and 1,000 with lead. I find the PBA fast, but not very accurate. Although they areneeded in high velocity springers to lube the barrel....you CANNOT oil these bad boys at all, they can diesel with any petroleum products. I have been using Predator hunting pellets for some time now, I can puch 1 ragged hole at 50 yards if I do my part. They are nasty fun and make a good mess. Work very well on crows, when lead will just skip off the feathers these punch right on through.

My RWS magnum 350 is a tack driver, and drives Exacts at a bit over 1000fps.

Easily shoot starlings out to 120+ yards in my back field.
