WIN. model 70 safari

i have heard nothing but good reviews on the new model 70, i have one myself and love it. FN is making them now and FN don't make junk, i think you'll be quite pleased with it.

Being a Rigby guy I have a natural hatred of the 416 Remington. That said, the Rigby doesn't fit in the M70 action, which I also have much love for. So if I wasn't so smart a Model 70 in 416 Remington would probably reside in my safe. Sadly, the Rigby needs more beef than the M70 has to offer so it's the Ruger RSM, CZ 550/602 or a mega Mauser like Satterlee, Empire or, dare to dream, a Brevex.

I've got one of the new safari's and I really like it. I don't think it will come along on any long distance walks with me (It's 10lbs +) but it shoots well and balances pretty nice to. Here's a picture of mine in 375 H&H

What I presently have is my 4th model 70, a Super Express in 458WM.

From the ones I've had, I've never found them lacking in quality. While to date I've not used it on game, all indications are the accuracy isn't too shabby so it should do well.

If I wsa buying a dangerous game rifle it would be my first choice in 375 H&H.
X2 ..... A 375Magnum makes a lot of sense over a 416.

Far better choice of reloading components, and a lot less expensive. A 375 is easy to shoot off the bench, so it will see more use and you will probably be able to shoot it better. A 375 would be far easier to sell down the road if you decide to move it.

I don't know about you guys but to me a DG rifle should have that warm and fuzzy factor. This rifle has it in spades, and while to me .375 or .458 win or Lott do it for me better then .416 remington if its what a guy wants you should be encouraging him.

i am contemplating getting a win, model 70 in 416 rem. does anyone know how the quality is, since browning bought them?

Most reports show new Win quality is better then their last few years. Just for info, Browning did not buy them. A company called GIAT (yes, it's French), owns FN, Browning, and Winchester, among others. The 416 Rem is the ballistic twin of factory loaded 416 Rigby, and that's a good thing in a DGR. - dan

I've got Safari Expresses in .416 and .458. Both excellent guns allthough the 458 had a few issues do to previous owners. Both very accurate. I've had many 375s over the years and have decided to go 416 whenever a 375 is called for. 350 TSXs are deadly, same trjectory as a 375/300 and good hitting power. If the new ones are better you can't loose.

Not to mention that a 400gr bullet at 2400 pretty much duplicates a 180gr at 2800 from a 30-06 in the trajectory department. I must admit to being a .416" aficionado though.
