This update is for anyone considering a Remington 5R as an entry to precision shooting. I picked up my 5R a little over a year ago. It was a bit pricier than I had budgeted for, so at the time of purchase I had to go "light" on the optics with an inexpensive 3-10 variable hunting scope.

Very recently I was able to upgrade to a 6-24x50 scope, and what a difference it makes - I can actually see detail out to 300 yards! Over the past year I was also able to slowly acquire reloading gear over the past year and work up a load that my 5R likes.

Here is the result - my first 5-shot group of handloads @ 300 yards:

For anyone considering the 5R (in .308), and I can say is "go for it"!

Also a word of thanks to everyone on these forums for the help and guidance in getting these results

Nice shooting, my 5R prefers a very similar round...

Berger 168Gr HPBT match @ 2.800" COL
43.4Gr Varget
CCI BR2 in a Remington case.

Just curious as to what type of set up for the optics on your Rem 5R. I'm sure others with a similar rifle would be interested in what you have put together. What type of scope, rings and rail do you have? That is an outstanding group for 300M though! Well done, that's some nice shooting.

This is my current setup:

Leupold 1-piece base
Millet high rings
Bushnell 4200 Tactical 6-24x50

That group was achieved shooting off a concrete bench with a Harris bipod up front, and a sandbag under the back.

ryandpahl your load is very similar to mine: 168gr Hornady Match HPBT pushed by 43.1gr Varget out of federal brass (neck sized) with a Rem 9 1/2 primer.

All I can say, is nothing but love for 5R's.

side note, just downloaded your target, and played around on On Target with it, and center to center, the max spread of that group is 1.53", which at 300 yards is 0.487 MOA... Hella nice.

I just picked up a 5R in .223, Can't wait to bring it to the range!

Great choice :) I can say from experience those 48hrs from the time I first picked up my 5R until I made it out to the range was one of the longest 48 of my life.

I can't speak to the .223, but for factory ammo my .308 does well with Federal Gold Medal (about $40/20) and Winchester 180gr (about $19/20). However best performance is definitely achieved with handloads.

Post your experience once you get out to the range!

A quick tip for 5R owners.
For sight in the 165 grain Fusion ammo works great. It'll shoot just under 3/4moa and the POI is only 1 click off the 168 Federal Gold. Plus you can hunt with it if you wanted to use your 5R for that.
