My local gun shop was having an Open House/Sale this week, and they had Savage Edge XP's on Sale at $319+tx, it came to $360 all in. The gun comes with a Simmons 3-9X40 Scope, and one Detachable Magazine. I have never owned a Savage before, so I thought I would try one out, how could you go wrong for the price.
You may have noticed that it is not sporting the Simmons scope, the hunting that I am planning on using this for, close in WhiteTail Deer, probably won't shoot past 100 yards, so I promptly put a Red dot on it that I had sitting in the Cabinet. You may also notice that the firearm itself is a little trimmer than it should be. The first thing that happened out of the package was a trim job with Mr. Hacksaw. 3 1/4" removed to better maneuver through the thick stuff. Many might remember the thread that CanAm had going about a special run of short barreled Carbines, well, I could wait no longer, LOL!
After the trim, it got the file treatment as well as a new crown. Turned out alright I think for my first attempt at it!
So now it is a nice light maneuverable bush carbine! The trigger also got a Dremel Polishing treatment, it breaks clean and crisp, around 4 Pounds after a coil was removed from the spring, LOL! I guess the warranty is pretty much pooched now huh!
Some more gratuitous pics:
After getting it on paper, it actually kicks pretty good, being so short and a total weight of just a hair under 7 pounds, I got about a 1 1/2" group with the Red Dot, it has a 1 MOA dot, and using Factory Winchester 150 gr. Power Points (that's all I had in the Cabinet), I think it performed pretty well. All 3 shot were fired in under a minute, and with the thin barrel, one would expect some stringing! I will be making some handloads for it, and may plop a scope back on it to see how it can really shoot after deer season. I may also try and bed it as well, it is kinda funky though, it has a removable recoil lug, something that I have never seen before!
