What's the best solution for a bore guide for use with a Smith vortex-type flash hider; the 12 ga shell doesn't fit?

Anyone have experience with the pricey Otis cleaning systems for M14 rifles: http://www.otisgun.com/pc_product_detail.asp?key=9ADC8D873B3F4D92B1294680D023BC3F ? I have the Otis pack for shotgun and for pistol (much cheaper) and they are slick. The M14 systems are pricey, but are they worth it?

Also, what about bolt disassembly rigs; are they a good investment? Where would you buy one in the West?

Cheers!

IIRC, a plastic cigar case/tube it over the end of the Vortex perfectly............I drilled a hole in the center of one end and viola, bore guide........;)

plus I would never use a bore snake on any of my firearms.........

And to add, when cleaning an M14 type rifle, insert a stripper clip into the stripper clip guide far enough that it covers the bolt face................this will stop you from releasing the bolt when using a cleaning rod.........;)

I would simply get .30 brushes for your current Otis kit.

If you have a match barrel, I would not use any type of bore brush on it...............just use cotton patches and a good solvent that will remove copper fouling.................

I never used a bore brush on any of my M14 Type rifles............

Push the patches through the bore and remove them from them when they come into the action.......never, ever pull a dirty patch back through the bore..........

Sure. I will agree with that. In fact, that goes the same with many rifles. I personally don't do a whole lot of brushing at all(on personal and service firearms, on bore and chamber).

However, what I'm saying is that for his Otis kit, he can simply buy that individual bits(namely brush and patch holder-the latter being pretty universal in Otis kits)

If referring to a match barrel, I won't even bother with an Otis kit and just go for a proper single piece rod.

The nice thing about the Otis is that the patch always, and only, goes from breech to muzzle. The Otis is in part intended for portable convenience, but, is there an advantage to cleaning with a rod?

lol... pick up one o'them sweet '82 or '64 pattern CF cleaning kits appropriate for the C1/C2's, and don't shove the dirt into the action. Winding the patch on the jag can get complicated tho'... Nice kits, made by Parker-Hale, and relatively easy to find.

I'm using good ol' Hoppes#9, many swipes with perhaps two patches to wipe out the dirt, finishing with one more to finish up cleeeean!! I keep this last patch for the next time; hate wasting perfectly good 4x2's...

Good tip about the stripper clip/bolt retainer tool! Now I don't have to strip the rifle in order to give it a quick clean.

Love these forums, I've learned more than I thought I could. Excelletn!!

That's a great idea! I wish I would have thought of that the first time I cleaned my barrel. Thanks! :D
