Ducks in the a.m.

Early goose for us is next Tuesday.
No ducks until later in the month.

I am looking forward to the early hunt but the bugs are gonna be bad!
 
Yes, it is the eve for me. Tomorrow I get up and hunt geese and ducks as they return to the puddles after a morning of attempting to feed on pea and wheat fields. hopefully they're a little more stupider this year.
also, the alberta possession limit has gone from 16 to 24 for canadas...

I couldn't get out for the opener due to work commitments so I took the boys out after school to do some grouse hunting in the mountains. It was alternating between pouring rain and sunshine and the grouse were not in evidence. Luckily we found a small slough that had some ducks in it. We did a sneak and I managed to knock down 5 with a triple and a quick reload (they're kinda stupid the first few days). There's only 4 teal pictured. The dog figured he should eat the first one (mallard) before he retrieved the other 4. He's never done that in the 8 years I've had him. We have put him on a strict diet though, so maybe this is payback.

Come on, all these prairie boys on here and not too many pictures yet. You guys should be dropping them left right and center.

We just opened this morning. Great hunt, Big dumb resident honkers who will turn around with a plee call after already getting shot at is something only they will do normally. :) The lessers and cacklers in a month or two is what I'm waiting for.

Today was even worse.

I took my boys out this morning for a water shoot. It was a mess. When I have the kids, I tend to lose my focus on what I'm doing (thinking about whether they're OK instead of ducks). Set up in what I thought was the wrong spot (realization coming AFTER I set the dekes). Moved to the "right" location. Wrong. Shot a few magpies and a hooded merganser. Worst showing in Alberta ever.

Pulled the pin and as we were loading up ducks started piling into the location I had abandoned at the beginning of the day. Dog was not happy. Kids laughed at me because I missed three other ducks for the one I got. Maybe that's why they said they still had fun and want to go next week -- they want to see Dad screw up again. Anyway, I must be getting old because I still consider it to be a great day.
 
season is not going too bad for a rookie, only duck hunting ive done was 18years ago with a buddies dad (watching him shoot and us plucking them)

first location was dried up, got denied permission on all 3 wide open locations with a hill backdrop that i had scouted out :( what a $#!T wed, thursday scouting for a couple hours found a dream location with over a couple hundred ducks and not a house for miles but got denied when the lady was home on sat :( but on a positive note it wasnt all a waste as another farmer walked me out of earshot of his wife and told me she wont even let him hunt on the property but that he takes his fill around an area 45min away :) planning on that next weekend
friday found one farmer who was more than happy to let me shoot on his oversized slough's (rain made it good this year) and a ok for another converted farmland to slough section of land on the other side of the road

2 med sized blue teals on friday, 4 on sat, and 5 sun :) I wanna keep the increasing trend going next weekend

two coots on sun also, but after biting into one they dont count, buddy said it tastes like leather, i think more like overcooked liver, dogs wouldnt even eat it

ive seen two birds nailed with shot and fly away, four others managed to dissapear in the thick grass/reeds, steel shot is inhumane, on a positive note some yoties got a good meal

I am looking forward to another weekend of duck huting

Hunting a slough without a good retriever is "inhumane". Stick to the fields if you don't have a good dog, that way you at least have a slim chance of finding your birds.
 
I don't want to get in the middle of the steel shot vs bad shooting love in but, I've been out a few times and it's always the same....so many ducks, I don't know which to shoot first, so i just sit there and watch them come in from every direction. I try to identify each species and usually don't end up shooting too many, it's too easy!
