New Savages in .250 and .300 Sav.

I know one CGNer has a new .250 Savage. How many of you have a new Savage - American Classic or Weather Warrior - in either of these outstanding chamberings? Have any of you done load developement? I suspect they shoot, just like every other Savage!

In my view both the .250 and the .300 are absolutely excellent cartridges.

I first noticed that they were offering these two classic calibers in the beginning of the year - even though I haven't purchased one yet, I sent Savage an email praising their choice of reintroducing the two calibers.
 
I have a Savage 99 from the early 50s that has the old rifling but still zips a 90gr bullet along at a brisk pace. Working up loads as we speak. Store ammo at $65 a box was not an option. Absolutely no recoil at all-only a bit more kick than my 223. Damn fine little rifles.

I just saw 5 boxes of 250 Sav. ammo for 36.99 a box. @ 65 they are ripping people off!
 
I'm a fan of removeable mags and don't own a stainless rifle. I've been mulling over the idea of ordering a Savage stainless clip model. (No flames, please - Savage calls it a clip!)

I'm a huge fan of the .250-3000; I had a 99 takedown that was crazy accurate and easy to shoot well. I ffolishly sold it.
 
I put a Shilen barrel in .250 on my stainless model a few years back, and I love it. Of course, I found out that Savage was reintroducing their .250 and .300 in their bolt guns a couple months afterwards. As for accuracy and handiness, the calibre is terrific! Very low recoil, even with the 117 grain bullets, and more than enough accuracy to kill a deer within 300 metres. I had a time finding brass at first, though. I ended up necking-up some .22-250 brass, which felt a little strange. Soon, I'll even be trying out some cast boolits in it! I love this rig, and I think the factory models will be just as good.

I read a post about a year back on OODmag. Some fella had ordered a detach-mag 300 Win Mag and I think it was about a hundred bucks extra. I remember a post on CGN a few years ago where the question was, what would you like the big companies to offer? I said I'd like to see them offer custom chambering on regular-stock rifles without going the custom shop route and paying big bucks. Little did I know that Savage already offered that service!
Apparently they will chamber most common and less-uncommon cartridges. I do believe one can even get my beloved .257 Roberts if one requests it. Wonder if their action can accommodate a .300 H&H? Mmmmm............

Erik, what powder do you like with 117 grainers? I used H4831 on the advice of John Barsness, and accuracy was okay, considering my slow-twist barrel.
I found Reloder 15 to be a fantastic performer with 100 and 87 grain bullets.
 
250 Savage

I have loaded 4 different bullets over 3 different powders and none have produced a 100 yard group of over 2" :cool:

This latest one is exceptional and the rifle printed 3 consecutive 3 shot 104 yard groups none of which was over 3/4" :D

110 grain Accubond, 37 grains IMR 4350, Federal GM210M primer, Reformed Remington 22-250 Brass. 2550 fps from the 18 1/2" barrel

'Boo - good shooting! It's almost time to harvest one of those big bodied Mulies you have running around in your neck of the woods. Wait a sec, today was opening day, wasn't it?

Yes, for archery. Rifle season doesn't open for a week and half.

Our reduction to a single mule deer really hurts me. I don't want to take an early meat buck as I will then have to travel out of our zone to take another. ( I hate tagging out early ;) )

My moose draw opens on the 10th and I will start hunting hard then. I really want to take a mulie with the RSI but with my luck I will stumble over a big 4 point while packing the .338.

Oh the problems you face...:p

I have a draw up in 5-15A - that's basically in your back yard!
