Well I think I may have made a mistake on one of the scopes I bought this year. It is a leupold Var lll 6 power, and has the thick duplex. Just got back into shooting/hunting this year after a long layoff. I am also over 60 and the eyes are not what they used to be.
I put this scope on a Sako 7mm-08 and went to the range today to sight it in.
I found the reticle was to thick and covered more of the target @ 100yds than I liked. I mean the groups would be a dead deer etc. but I have abit higher standards. I have 2 other 3-9 x 40 Zeiss scopes, one of which will be on it tomorrow. I think I will put the 6 power Leupold on my T-bolt 22lr, not ideal but best I can do for now.
Also I think my choice in target could have been better. I was using the Red Star Tripple Three, in orange, not bad but the reticle covered the fat orange lines. Any suggestions, thanks Roscoe

Send it off to the guys at Korth's in Okotoks. For about $100 they'll change your reticle and adjust your parallax (if you want to use it on your rimfire). They do fantastic work. Not sure where you live but if you're in gopher country, look hard at the Leupold Dot reticle- it rocks for gophers and small game.

Thanks

Hey Bassman, didnt know they could do that. I would probably loose more money selling it. I will look into it, a thinner reticle will be much better on the 22lr. I will stick to the 3-9 x40 for the 7mm-08. Thanks for the suggestion. Cheers Roscoe

The best part is that it only takes about a week or so to get your scope back. Check out the Leupold dot reticle on Leupolds website, perfect for a .22 rimfire.

That dot reticle and a parallax set at 50 or 60 yards would be the cat's meow for gophers.

Higher standards? Do you mean for shooting paper or hunting? Thick duplex is great for a HUNTING scope, especially for older eyes. If you're just shooting paper you should have bought a target scope.

Stick it on the EE and knock $100 bucks off the new price and someone will buy it. It's a really bad choice for a T22. No use turning bad to worse.

X 2. Lets not get "higher standards" mixed up with "different preferences". The heavy duplex or fixed 6 may not be my favorite reticle/scope either, (I've only got 2 of each) but for what they're good for, they are very good for.
I'd suggest using a different target like a 100 yard smallbore target, then take your hunting rifle hunting. Or just sell it and start over.

I'm guessing his scope is a variable, maybe a VXIII 1.5-6? No such thing as a Vari III 6 power.

There are no fixed power scopes in the VX or even the old VariX lineups. If it is a fixed 6 then it is a M or FX model, not a VariX or VX model.

3 great options given, Send it to Korth to change the reticle ($100) and have the scope you want. Sell it on EE for $100 less than you paid and buy another, might get the one you want. Or Use it for hunting larger game and in the thick brush you will be thanking your creator you kept the thick reticles. I have a thick reticle'd mark 4 I hate for target shooting but for hunting its the go to optic. I say keep it for now and think about it, use it a bit more before you do anything, it won't cost you any thing to do so.

I know he has to be wrong about either the "Vari X, VX" thing or the "6" thing. I guessed one way, you guessed the other. ;) Either way, the heavy reticle is a great big game aiming device and not so great on gophers or 1" targ dots. It might even be perfect for dangerous game.
The fixed 6, heavyduplex has an almost cult-like following, which may have influenced my guess.

Sorry, it is the FX straight 6 power, also thanks for all the good advise from everyone. Cheers Roscoe

Yea, think I may have read to many Jack O'Conner articles when I was younger instead of looking at the new technology. Cheers ps also felt I could have used a bit more magnifiction

I feel the same way, as much as I respect the fixed, I always seem to grab one of my higher powered variables and go.
The 6s go on my son's guns. It simplifies his life, just put the X on something and kill it.

I love almost all 6X scopes, they are great for hunting open country without compromise in magnification, if I can't hit it with the 6X then I shouldn't be shooting! If used as a paper puncher it is even alittle enimic on a 22lr if shooting past 50 yards, even for my middleage eyes. It is funny that a 3X9 is cheaper than most fixed power scopes? take care and send the scope to Korth for a new reticle if you only don't like the reticle and change it out for the $100, Dale in T-Bay

It is on its way back to Korth for a new reticle. It will go on the 22 when it comes back. I figured I would have taken a bigger hit selling it and didn't want to wait forever. Thanks for all the help. And to Dogleg you do win something, My thanks and a good guy award. Cheers Roscoe

I have to agree with Ted about the heavy duplex.. Best 5 shot group out of my 9.3X62 was 5/8" at 100 meters using a 1.5X5 Vari X-III with a heavy duplex.. Trick is to have a good target and of course a lot of bench time..
My favorite target can be found here:
http://www.mytargets. com
The one I speak of is the fourth target down called the GRID TARGET WITH SIGHT ALINGMENT AID
I can divide the red square into quarters with a heavy duplex..
Good luck with your 708, one of my favorites..:)

Hey, I think the target had alot to do with it in hind sight. It probably would have worked better if I had rotated it 45 degrees. I will check out the one you like. Thanks for the help. Cheers Roscoe
