O.K.

I'm torn, my brain is tired. I can't make up a decision as to which calibre and rifle I should get. I'm actually just about exhausted from it all. 270 Win? 7mm Rem Mag? 338 Win Mag? 30-06? I already have a 30-06. It is a beautiful Browning Bar Safari grade 4 from 1968. I got it off a guy some time ago and I don't think he ever took it hunting. Anyway, I don't want to keep taping it to go friggin hunting and have the boys call me names and make fun of me. I also don't want to scratch the beautiful wood. I want to get an accurate bolt rifle, dosen't have to be new. I want somthing that I won't be afraid to scratch. I figured that out. But, which cal should I get? I don't want a 300 mag. I want a more old school cartridge. Any recomendations as to a gun and cal? Like I said, It dosen't have to be a new gun but I will fork out the money if I have to. Sako hunter? Winchester model 70 super delux? Etc. What to do?????? Oh ya its for moose and deer!

Pretty tough for anybody to answer that question for you. What ranges will you be hunting? How tall are you? Big hands or small? Long arms or short? Long slender face or round chubby face? All these factors (and more) will affect how the rifle feels to you. My advice is go to a shop and handle some different rifles see what feels good to you. As far as cartridge goes, do you like recoil? Do you hand load? .338 win will have lots of power for moose, elk, and such. .30-06 can also handle moose and elk with less recoil and cheaper more available ammo. .270 with good bullets will also take these animals (although I would prefer more power) and it's perfect for deer. The 7mm mag is an excellent cartridge, perhaps my favorite magnum. 160gr bullets will handle everything you will point it at. Flat shooting, reasonable recoil fairly easy to find ammo available in lots of nice rifles.

Find a nice rifle that fits you in any of these chamberings and should work for you. If it doesn't...... put it on the EE and try again :D!

I think you need to pick what best suites your hunting and shooting conditions. Bush hunting? field hunting? both? what ranges and what animals?

savage 99f in .308. ghost ring for heavy bush-light and fast handling. Slap a scope on it for the bigger spaces-as accurate as most bolt actions. Factory loads will handle everything in north america, but the really big bears (although I would not hesitate to use it in a pinch) and a huge variety of bullets for the reloader. Will do anything a 30-06 will do, but in a lighter short action.

See, its tough... too many options.

Kimbernan, I'm in my twenties, I'm tall, long arms etc. I'm single too.....Just joking! I do reload. Well my friend does and I help him. He has everything I need. 7mm mag seems to have really nice ballistics. But they all do. Any model preferences with great accuracy without killing my wallet? what is EE and tradex

thanks for the help gents.

EE is the equipment exchange on this site. You need to sign up for access to it. Tradex is an online firearms site. tradeexcanada.com

My usual advice if you're not totally bent on a boltgun-
The Remington 7600 (I like the 30.06) is an excellent hunting rifle. Quick followup shots and as accurate as stock boltguns IMO. Let us know what you decide.:)

I think the weatherby vangaurds are good value for the $$. They come in a variety of chamberings and a few different models. They have a weatherby shape stock which may or may not fit you. The Thompson Center venture is also good value, as well as the savages. I like the older model rem 700 BDL's or ADL's too and there are a couple in 7 mag on the EE right now for good prices (I think). Or you can get into the kimbers, sako's and coopers depending on what price point you choose.

IMHO if I were you I would snag one of the used rem 700's in 7mag from the EE. It's nice to deal with a fellow nut, and sometimes you'll get some good load info or tips on what the rifle likes and what it can do. Although there is always a little risk with buying used. Don't forget to pick up some quality optics and mounts to go with it.

BUT, in the end YOU have to pick out your rifle and YOU have to use it. So get the one you want and not what some guy on the internet says you should have! ;)

anybody that makes fun of an '06 DOESN'T KNOW VERY MUCH- that 06 has taken more game than all the rest of the cartridges combined, with the possible exception of the 30-30- and the bar is one of the best platforms to deliver it from- you set that 06 up with 180 grain pills and you'll take anything with the exception of big bears from alaska
remember if you go for one of the big magnums, you pay in lots of ways- weight, recoil, and cost of ammo, moreover you LOSE 2 rounds typically

Very important for those who cannot shoot very accurately.......:stirthepot2:

My suggestion is a M710 and a 3x9 Tasco.

My hunting partners aren't making fun of the 06, they are making fun of ME for taping up my stock like a baby so I don't scratch it. Right now I'm loading 165grainer Hornady Interbonds with varget. I would like my pattern to tighten up a bit but I think it is just due to the extremely hot weather here in southern Ontario and the fact that the barrel heats up quickly. I'm gonna go shooting when I get back from work in a few weeks and see if the groups tighten up at all in cooler weather. Anybody else have any favorite loads to try for this gun.

There are quite a few guns that won't break your budget. The Savage edge, the Stevens 200,the Marlin XL7-XS7,The savage package rifles too name a few.All have received pretty decent reviews.Your best bet is to go to the local gun store and shoulder a few and see what best fits for you.You can't really go wrong with a .270,.308 or 30.06.

Find the rifle you want, and buy it regardless of chambering...cartridge selection is fun to debate online and around the campfire, but there is really sweet f@ck all difference in performance between most cartridges for what most hunters do.

The .270/30-06/7RM are all in the same class of catridges.

oh, that's a DIFFERENT story- my bar wears a thing called a GUNSKIN for 2 reasons- 1 i don't want to scratch that mirror finish, and 2 )it's available in realtree so i don't have to paint it- and it's EXACTLYit says- you just slip it over the barrel, work it down to the action, ( you may have to remove and replace the sling swiel stud- it just unscrews) and velcros shut at the back of the stock- it was about 35 bucks at gander mountain in the states-the only scratch i have on mine came from a "safe kiss" when th skin wasn't on the gun
as far as loads go, you MIGHT see an improvement if you go to 180 grain - i did with my 308- seems to be about ideal for a 1/12 - i looked it up and yours is a 1/10 , so you're not doing it any favours by using 165's
