I just finished assembling a beauty combo for one of my colleagues. He had a big debate over the cartridge , between 7Mag and 270Win. He settled on the 270 so he did not have to deal with the added recoil of the 7Mag. We built a Model 70 Extreme Weather topped with Talley lightweights and a VX3 3-10X40 with the B&C reticle and a Harris bipod. Beatiful little rifle that will do everything he wants from pronghorn to elk. Personally, I feel he got a better combination straight from the shelf than I did with my custom 280.

Hardly an issue for guys with more than one tag.....
Precisely why I am poking fun at a guy asking an internet forum what kind of gun he should get. He should expect answers like 400lbs and no teeth......
I have a 700 BDL in 7-08 that shoots one hole groups at 100M. It has shot everything from woodschucks (gophers) to deer and cariboo. I have also a 375HH that shoots dime sized groups at 100M at bear and deer. I shot this February a just short of record gnu in South Africa with a 30-06. Meanwhile I have shot cariboo, deer, woodchucks and so much other game with many handguns: a 45-70 SSK Contender, 357 SuperMag, XP100 in 7-08, PPK/S .380, Springfield 45, Seville 357 Super Mag, Dan Wesson 44 Mag, TC in 7TCU and probaly a few more in the last 30 years.
It is all about proper loads and bullet placement. I will not shoot big game wil it is running. I do find that 300 Win Mag in most rifles (I have sighted in a large number of rifles for a gunshop) kick as do 7 Mag. The 375 HH will push an not kick.
The most versatile I have found is the 7-08. It will outperform the 30-06 in most cases at distance as it has a better BC. So, a 140 or 162 gr 7mm bullet will outperform a 150 or 168gr 30 caliber bullet. i have had some similar performance with the Swedish 6.5. If a Swede can knock a moose with a 6.5, it is good unoff for me. I have not had a chance using my 6.5 for moose. M Remington snipe 700BDL with a Leopold 8.5X20X50 has shot deer cleanly through the ribs for a many a heart/lung shot and once out in between the ribs!
There are many recipies out there. Handloads are best but otherwise, Federal Premium shoot nearly as well.

Women and guns are two totally different things. You can kill a bear with a gun. You can't kill a bear with a women. (unless its my ex, she would just nag it to death). You can lock a gun in a steel safe and leave it there without giving it food and water for as long as you want. You can't make a gun clean your house. I wasn't really asking for you to hold my hand at the gunshop Joe. I was more or less asking peoples preferances other than my hunting buddies. But thanks for the help Joey!
Since you already have a 338, I would suggest something a little different. A 7mm mauser or a 6.5x55 Swedish mauser. Both should be at tradex.
My usual advice if you're not totally bent on a boltgun-
The Remington 7600 (I like the 30.06) is an excellent hunting rifle. Quick followup shots and as accurate as stock boltguns IMO. Let us know what you decide.

I have a stable of guns of all sorts and each holds a special place in my heart and there is a tool for any situation.... Your quest is not a simple one - everyone has a different set of needs and each gun performs different to each user.......
I agree with the gentleman who wrote the above quote. Out of all my guns my ole 7600 in 'odd 6' (30.06) is my favourite! I would not sell her for the world! (well for a $1M - MAYBE!). I bought her when I was 15 years old from a my summer's lawn cutting earnings.... I remember plunking down each crumbled $10 bill! This gun is the first out of the safe every season and the last one to be put to bed.
Good for deer, moose, bear, wolf... whatever it will put it down. Very effective for 125 yards and under, which is where most game is taken down IMHO.
30-06 ammo is ultra common and found almost anywhere in a pinch. Cost effective to reload.

I got one of those too in a 700 Mountain Rifle... absolutely beautiful. It does at 300 yards what the 30.06 does at 100 yards. I love to shoot a 165grain load in my 300 WIN magnum. A varmit at 300 yards in as good as dead. As mentioned ammo is more expensive and she loves to use more powder.
My advise is go to the range with your friends and try a few different combinations of gun models and calibers. Some of us spend our lives finding that elusive 'perfect rifle'... Good luck my friend.
Limiting a 30-06 to 100yds is plain wrong, at 300yds the 30-06 will still do what the 300 win mag will (with less powder burnt)
True CrazyDave but i meant 125 yards with the 7600.... not with the 30.06 calibre........
I used to shoot a 760 in 30-06 and have taken more than a few animals around the 300 yard mark, the rifle used to be my fathers and he shot many way further than that including 3 bears one at a measured 527 yards.

I second the tradeex.com advise. Get a Husky in 30-06. You won't be out a ton of $, and you'll have a great hunting rifle.
