What more do you really need? Lightweight rifles, low recoil, 140gr partitions, shoots flatter than .308 and hits harder, better BC.

The real question is which coleman stove are you going to bring?
 
7mm RM for my vote, mainly because of it's stopping power on moose and that it's a flat shooting cartridge.

Although all of those rifles will definitely do the job (distance on the .30-30 should be closer than the others IMHO), really it's a matter of personal preference. (I just bought a .300 WM for this year's hunt and am excited about trying it out).

30-06 has enough power for any game in Canada within the range most people would shoot. Bullets are most common, less recoil than magnums. If the short action turns your crank, get a 308. The real world difference is probably very little.

The 308win,30-06,300savage,300wsm,300winmag,300wby.300RUM,and many others all use the same bullets,so you could just as easily say that the 300RUM bullets are the most common.
 
I am hunting Deer in the North Bay area, and Moose in the Thunder Bay area, so I can shoot any size caliber I want. I may end up getting a 30-06 rifle, if the one I ordered does'nt show up by the end of the month.
 
I'm thinking that most of your shooting will be within say 150 yds. so I'd go with a lever action 45/70 and handloads.
 
The place we go moose hunting, is about 2 hours NorthEast of Thunder Bay, and at some of the lookouts, there is the possibility of taking 300-400 yard shots. Although most of the people up there still usually take them from less than 150 yards, but there still is the possibility.

I have noticed that a lot of the guys that are hunting up there are using Magnum cartridges.

However, the place we go deer hunting, is thick bush, and most deer are taken at around 50-75 yards, and the longest being 150 yards.
 
All around short or long distance with a short action at + 3000FPS

Ill go Grampa Style with a 45-70 or a 444 just because it's more fun
 
As for .308 vs. 7mm-08, actually the .308 shoots flatter, and DEFINITELY hits harder due to bore size and greater efficiency with equivalent bullet weights, ESPECIALLY heavy bullets which will be used for moose.

You don't need a heavy bullet for moose,in fact the 140grTTSX is my go to bullet for all of my big game hunting,including moose and elk.
