Well, I ended up buying a Tikka T3 Lite Stainless in...........30/06............

My last Rifle was a .300win mag, and I had one on order, but it was late(a Savage Weather Warrior .300Winmag), so I stepped up to the plate, spent a extra $200 and bought a Tikka in 30/06.

Seemed like the overwhelming majority agrees that 30/06 will do the job, so I did'nt want to disagree.

If you want a new rifle and want to go up to Moose sized creatures then your best bet is 30-06. 180gr NPTs at 2750 FPS is deadly moose medicine while not being excessive on deer.

There ain't nothin you can't fix
With a hundred dollars and a 30-06.

Pick whatever 30-06 rifle suits you best. Mount a 3-9x40 OR a fixed 4 x scope. Buy some Winchester Super-X 180 gr Power Point ammo, and start shooting it. The Super-X PP bullets are excellent moose or deer bullets in a 30-06, and it is not expensive ammo.

That pretty much describes the rifle I carried for the first 10 years of my hunting career. Never needed more, never was under gunned. Moose, elk, deer, one antelope, and a couple black bears. If you can shoot it, they will come. :)

7mm RM for my vote, mainly because of it's stopping power on moose and that it's a flat shooting cartridge.

Although all of those rifles will definitely do the job (distance on the .30-30 should be closer than the others IMHO), really it's a matter of personal preference. (I just bought a .300 WM for this year's hunt and am excited about trying it out).

Happy Hunting!

I agree, the big 7 is an underated cartridge these days!

I've killed a lot of moose and deer over the years, with many different calibers.
My favourite gun for the past 7 years or so is the 280 Remington using handloaded 139 grain Hornadys pushed to 3000'/s. With this combo and a 4 x 12 Leupold scope I've killed 25 deer and moose ....and some years I didn't even pull the trigger on a deer or moose .

The 30-06 has been doing just fine for deer and moose for 100 years and will do so for many more years. But my pick for the best cartridge for deer and moose is the 300 H&H Magnum. The cartridge case of the 300 H&H gives it the edge with it's long neck enabling it to hold 130 grain to 220 grain bullets stable without having to deep seat the bullets. The ample case size will contain enough powder to push that 220 grain bullet as far as necessary and then some, but still allow a lighter bullet and load for smaller game. The tapered case helps the 300 H&H to be versitile and powder efficient. More bang for the buck. Helps to keep the pressure lower as well. Also, the tapered case feeds through the rifle like hot knife through butter.

The down side is, the rifle needs to be built on a long action and that's one reason the shorter 300 mags came into favor as a shorter 300 mag could be built on a receiver where the maximum cartridge length would be a 30-06 sizing. Deer and moose are where you find them and all the cartridges mentioned will get the job done, just the 300 H&H is my favorite.

250gr .45cal (.50cal sabot) Barnes TMZ in front of 110grs/volume of Pyrodex Select FFG
or a good 'ole thutty-thutty with a 170gr RN or FP, But really...any of the ctg's listed will do the job.

308, there is a very good reason they are chosen as a sniper calibre, when accuracy and fatality are a must they have to pick the right caliber. Ballistics do matter. the 308 has been over studied over analyzed by many many bright minds and technology that is hard to argue with. Lots of hunters have had success with all of the calibers mentioned and that can't be argued either and everyone has their favourite for what ever reasons but with but if you want the best the .308 is it.
