Sounds like the operation went well then.

You don't have any cracks developing a year later after the brasso exposure, huh?;):)

I'll go one further and hypothesize that other solvents in the brasso help evaporate the ammonia and thats why it smells stronger.
If that were the case it would smell very strong for a short time then be gone completely. I believe what is taking place is that the hydrogen atoms in the ammonia are being bonded with a carbon atom in an oil molecule. Thus the ammonia smell lingers for ever because it takes a long time to evaporate completely away. The oil molecule is present to give the brass a coating to minimize surface exposure to oxygen. This is just high school chemistry though so don't take my word as gospel.
