Accuracy of CMMG AR15

Ive never put any scope on my AR, so I dont really have any accuracy results. I just use winchester whitebox and their great.

< 2" at 100 yards with a strikefire red dot. Freefloat barrel, 14.5" with PWS FCS556 brake

Hey Gun Lover,

I bought a 20' gov't profile barreled 1/7 twist CMMG last year from Questar based on my good friend Hungry's suggestion. It is very accurate (1" and 2" groups at a 100 yds) using cheapo American Eagle 55 grain ammo (I'm looking forward to taking full advantage of the twist ratio with heavier bullets (69 grain Sierra) at longer range but have not done so yet). I'm thinking about cutting 2" off the end (for weight reduction and maneuverability) but Hungry says that all my girlfriends will ditch me if I do

On the bright side though, fewer females equals more ammo :D

As far as I know, cutting the barrel would be illegal. Your going to have to barrel swap to shorten it if you're serious.

you can shorten it, but nothing under 18-5 inchs. Then it's illegal, to me cutting a 20" barrel to lose 1-5" is stupid.

O rly? My smith, tacOrd, schooled me that it's a no-no cutting any length from an AR factory bbl, so I got a shorter bbl'd upper instead, proper port sizes and all.

I wouldn't cut an AR barrel but you can have any barrel length you want on an AR platform as it is already restricted, the 18.5 " rule no longer applies. I think the next step from a 20" is 16" that's what I have on mine. Just buy another barrel and re-barrel your upper you don't need a new one. As far as accuracy goes it's hard to beat a well built AR.

From what I've seen most CMMG AR's seem to be ~2MOA, but then again it depends on so many factors and as they have so many options...

It is already restricted............ don't worry about barrel length.

If it is chrome lined, especially don't chop it. You'd have to get one recrowned anyway. Just get a new barrel installed with the appropriate gas system for the barrel length.

Freefloat if you want to maximise accuracy.

You can cut any barrel down to 18.5" and its still only restricted.

However understand, that cutting a barrel over 18.5" to below 18.5" OR, and I stress the point OR cut a barrel that is already below 18.5" at all renders the barrel a prohibited device. The law is clear and what happens to those who break the laws pertaining to prohibited devices is clear.

Wishing it weren't so won't make it true. Some guy on the internet said it was OK is no defence. Ask any smith who would perform the work to provide a bill of work including authorization from the CFC to cut the barrel below 18.5". It will never happen with the current laws because it is illegal.

Oh sure, you'll find yahoos who'll do it but they're not going to sit with you in court, pay you're legal fees or ever get your guns back once they are conficated.

Just buy whatever barrel length you want, slap it on and save all the money you spend on lawyers to get yourself several new AR's in several different lengths and a great gun safe. Be smart, play safe...

And my 11.5 CMMG piston w/ a bull in 1/7 dances around an inch at a 100m. You'll be happy with it.

Someone cut the barrel of my 16'' Bushmaster to 11.5''. Did not lost accuracy at all neither get any malfunction. I sold the whole upper to a fellow CGN member and I'm sure he's quite happy with it. Just saying.

Hehe, I take it it you dont have a Bargain Bin CMMG that goes for < $600... To be honest, I've never seen anything but their Bargain Bin AR's (which IMHO are very good)..

Thanks for your answers guys, I was starting to think it was only a problem with mine. I get about 2.5"-2.7", 5 shots groups at 100m with Winchester USA (very crappy ammo, at least the lot I got).

With very limited testing with my reloads, it gives me about 1" 5 shots groups at 50m with Hornady 53gr HP Match bullets and a bit over 3/4" at the same distance with Hornady's 68gr HPBT bullets. I haven't had the chance to try my reloads at 100m, yet.

I guess I'll try a bit more to see if I can get 1.5" groups at 100m. If I can get that, I'll stop the search and just enjoy shooting it. There's no point in trying to make these standard barrels shoot any better, I guess. Maybe I'll just get a decent trigger for it and that'll get me the groups I want. The standard trigger it comes with simply SUCKS!
