hey have an unrestricted rifle and want to put a comp on it but dont want to increase overall barell length so i was gonna get the gunsmith to take a few inches off the barrel at the same time. question is.... can i take it down to 18 inches with or without counting the comps lenght???
thanks

A muzzle attachement only counts towards barrel length when it's integral to the barrel. The origional AR-180B is an example. Otherwise, a muzzle attachement doesn't add to the barrel length. In days past, a silver soldered muzzle break would be allowed, but not any more.

I think if the brake is permanently fixed on via a pin or other device, then it does count towards barrel length.

I'm not certain of this though.

That works in the US, not here. As an example, the Bushmaster XM-15 clone, with the 11.5 inch barrel and permanently attached flash hider to meet the 16 inch minimum down south.

Nope. A brake never counts towards the barrel length. However, may count towards the overall length of the firearm.

To answer the OP, if it's a semi-auto you can cut it to >18.5" without the brake.

I believe that wording says Rifled barrel, so a flash hider or comp no longer counts.
As Canuck223 said above, it USED to, about 20 years ago.
