REM 700 Titanium finally done!!!!

Tang area

The tang area is the way Rembo set it up. I have zero skill inletting stocks etc. If you had it at 6lbs 1 oz Rick with a 2.5 -8x36, the 4.5-14x40 weighs 1.6 oz more, so the Williams bottom metal must be 3 oz more than the factory BDL.

I would have thought the williams metal was 3-4 oz heavier. Its steel and the factory floorplate is pot metal.

It weighed 6lbs 1 ounce with a 2.5-8X Leupold in Talley LW's.

That would have been my choice of scope too. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me to build and ultralight and then put a boat anchor scope on top of it. It is, after all, a 7mm-08, not a 300 WM.

Could have been even lighter if you had stayed with a blind mag, but they seem quite unpopular.

And another vote for turning the rings around. You could do that when you swap the scope out. :D

Rings

I have already turned the front ring around. And how is a 4.5-14x40 a boat anchor compared with a 2.5-8x36? There is a 1.6 oz difference between them. I will take the extra magnification for 1.6 oz. I had a 700 Titanium in .260 that I sold when I bought this one. I had lightened up even more, it had a 2.5-8x36 on it. That gun was fairly accurate,1" groups, but it was way more difficult to shoot well. I have had lots of experience with these light rifles over the last 5 years. When you get down to under 6 pounds scoped I have found them harder to shoot well, and they don't balance the same. This rifle in 7mm-08 that Rembo built just plain shoots!!!

The 4.5x15 is not a boat anchor, but when you go to such strides and expense to have the lightest gear, it seems counter productive to put heavier stuff on like bigger scope and bottom metal. It's your rifle. Who cares what we think?

BTW ... We're all jealous cuz we don't have a TI action to play with. ;)

Ti actions

I have two to play with.:D:D:D. If I showed you the other one I would probably get hate mail over the weight of it. But I also didn't build it. And the added 6oz over what it could be really helps me shoot better. I am not a sheep hunter, but do like climbing after mulies in the fall. This gun is the perfect weight for me, with the components I want. it handles well for me and I can shoot it VERY well. That in the end is all that matters. I find too as I get older I really like a little more power than 8. On long shots I usually have the scope on 10 or 11x.

I have two rifles under 6 pounds both with 4.5-14x40. It gives you an ultralight rifle with extra power in the scope if needed. 6lbs 5oz is a hell of a lot lighter than most guys guns.Plus Blacktailslayers gun flat out shoots.

I was only mildly jealous until I found out the OP has another Ti. Now I'm paralyzed with jealousy and regret. I passed on a used original ti in 270 some years back when I foolishly thought that mortgage payments and food were more important than gun deals. Aah, the folly of youth.

Barrel selection for Titanium action

Good day all

I just picked up a used but in excellent shape Model 700 Titanium short magnum action. So it was either in 270 WSM or 300 WSM before. So I am just in the process of trying to design my next "toy". I already have a Weatherby Ultralight in 280 AI that shoots 1/2" groups and weighs 6.58 pounds. I also have a Kimber 8400 in 300 WSM that is a very nice shooter that weighs in at 6.85 pounds. Both rifles have Leupold Ultralight scopes.

So the question is...

Chrome Moly or stainless barrel? I am looking at either a Krieger CM barrel or a Caillard SS barrel. But the difference will apparently be close to 0.75 pounds.

Cartridge - leaning towards either a 7 mm WSM or 6.5 x 300 WSM (aka 264 WSM). I thought about the 325 WSM but apparently it just is not that great of a performer according to a couple of people that I talked to. I also thought about a 257 WSM as well, but now we are getting pretty overbore.

Stock - Bell & Carlson Ultralight stock - basically this is what the Remington TI's came with from the factory is my thought.

Rings will be Talley lightweight rings. Both my Weatherby and Kimber have Talley steel rings and I could easily shave 3 ounces from the weight of the gun by switching to the Talley lightweights.
