new to bear

I have a weekend stag coming up this weekend and figured it would be a good chance to try and get my first bear......actually first anything!

I have read every thread i could find on how to skin a bear for a rug but i think i only want a head mount, so should i skin it the same way?
I am going up Friday evening, when i get there should i try and set up a bait pile for sat and sun?
what would be my best bet on going out looking for them, morning, evening mid day? (i was in the area a week ago and the damn things were running across the highway like dog's!....about 5-6 pm)
If i do get one is there any cuts that i can butcher off right then and cook over the fire that day? what where and how?
My options for a gun are, enfield .303, single shot 45/70, or model 94 30-30, all open sights.....I could also probably borrow a 300WM as i no longer have a scope on mine. any advice? (my 12G is a full choke so i don'y think i can shoot slugs with it???)

I know it's a lot of questions but this is my first time hunting anything bigger then coyotes, so if you have any advice i"m more then willing to take it.

oh and if it matters the area is between big river and blain lake Sk.
 
Find a corn or oat field backing onto big bush....talk to farmer and get permission. It will be epic.

Any of the rifles you have will be fine. Leave the shotgun at home....
 
If you want the head mounted, always take more of the hide than you think the taxidermist will need. For deer heads I skin the whole deer out and take it with the head just in case he needs a bit of fur to patch.

Any of those rifles will be perfect. Take the one you are most comfortable with.
 
If you are shooting open sights your probably limited to 100 yards so trajectory / bullet drop isnt an issue. Go with the biggest gun you are comfortable shooting.
 
okay so i will skin it like i'm planning on doing a rug so there should be lot's of hide left over.
I'll probably take the 45/70 with me and the 30-30, leave one in the truck...If my buddy come's out i'll use the 45 so i don't have to worry about follow up shot, if i'm bymyself i will take the 30-30 so i have a few extras just in case.

any thoughts on best time? or what i should butcher off and grill up right away?
 
Usually you start to see them more frequently an hour or two before dark. I like the loin cuts myself, but its all good eating as long as you get the fat off and cool it down quickly.

No. Do not do this if you are planning on a head mount.
You do not want a knife cut down its chest/neck. You need to case skin it.
How far it has to be case skinned depends if you want a head/neck mount or head/neck/front legs mount.

You best do a little internet reading.

and you will have the tastiest game meat you can get. I just discovered how good grain fed bear is and we will be filling all house hold tags this fall (why waste time chasing skittish critters when the tasiest ones stay out in the open all day!). A rug will cost you 500 bucks so make sure you take home every ounce of the meat to offset the cost. Can't stress enough enough how good grain fed bear is.

well we didn't find one bear, and never even caught a fish when we were out.
seen lot's of whitetail so i at least have an idea where to go this winter.
