SKS vs CZ 858..

I have run 500 rds through my SKS-D, but recently bought an 858 for a good deal. So far i have shot about 200 rds through the 858 and it is without a doubt, a far superior rifle. I have also shot a serious quantity through my friends 58 Tula, it shoots ok, but still doesn't hold a candle to the 858. His tula has a POSP scope set up and still shoots minute of pie plate at 100m. He shoots better with my 858/red dot than he does with his prized Tula/POSP. I will mount magnification on it next and see how much fine tuning can be acheived.

I like the look and feel of my sks-d,I held a cz and it looked and felt like a cheap stamped rifle with tacky furniture to boot.I never shot a cz, so no comparison report. Not trying to flame cz's,just my humble opinion :)

First time i got my cz, feel like a cheap ak looking rifle because she was very light but once i shoot it, i was really surprised with the accuracy and handling too. Never had any malfunctions with it. I have a chinese sks and 5 russians, somes collector grade, i dont use my sks's much now, only my cz. Both are very fun rifle to have, they are on my "never sell" list.:)

Vz-58 .

I don't know about the CZ 858 as available in Canada .
The US legal ( D-Tech built in the Czech Republic ) VZ-58's are well worth the price, IMO anyway .
I shoot shoulder guns mostly left handed and that version is very leftie friendly . It's also cool to shoot a gun that that our Slovak and Czech allies use in A-stan. I have also seen photos of female A-stan Nation Police with fairly new looking VZ-58's. The 58 is a very fine weapon for small statured people -- almost as handy and light as an M1 Carbine but with more power.

Buy both and decie for youreself.

They are both great guns with much in common and a number if important differences.

Get a 91/30 too. When you shoot them all you will feel the evolution of modern firearms happenening in your hands.

I have both but after reading the post on infamous CZ/VZ gremlin, I can't see myself ever buying another CZ. The firing mech is a very poor design IMHO. After finally taking a close look at how the thing works, it will be very prone to worn parts down the road, unlike the SKS. For a shooter ya, the CZ is fun with the mags and such, but I sure wouldn't what that POS in a pinch... Just my 2 cents worth. ;o)

I think it really comes down to personal preference and the state of the rifle itself. Naturally of course a brand new 858 will shoot better than a decades old SKS. And lets all get off this hear-say slam fire business, keep your rifle maintained with a strict cleaning regiment and it will not fail. Ive owned both but i only have my 858 now as the norc SKS wasnt in the best condition(no bayo, no cleaning rod,bit rusty), i will pick up a siminov eventually.

Let me share my opinion by example... I have a gun safe that holds 10 rifles, but in reality, it only holds 8 because of accessories, scopes, etc... I had to trim my collection by getting rid of one very tall rifle, and two of my least used rifles: one 858 and an old 22. The two shooter SKS's remain, as well as 4 separate collector grade SKS's stored at another location. Nothing wrong with the 858, but I prefer the SKS's for comfort, durability and

ACCURACY. Both SKS's shoot up to 3 inch groups at 100 yards with iron sights and surplus ammo. The 858 was only able to achieve 4 inch groups using the same ammo. I have a total of two crates + of ammo down the barrels to base this on.
