I just bought a cheapie Bushnell 600 scout. $219 at WSS. Seems to work OK. It's only rated to 200 yards on non-reflective targets like deer. I've ranged trees in town past 600m with it. The 4x optics seem to be good and it's very small and light, almost shirt pocket sized. There's only 1 button so it's uncomplicated. It doesn't have an angle correct (ARC) or BDC capability.
We'll see how it does when I take it out for mulies next month.
Buy either a Leica, Swaro or Zeiss (what he said ^^).
I have a Leica CRF 1200 and it is SUPER fast to get a reading, but sometimes it takes a few hits at distances around 1200-1500 yds. My friend has a Zeiss rangefinder and it is much slower to get the reading but works every time at the above distances. My other friend has a Swaro and it works out to 1500 meters! WOW.
Imo, the Leica is probably the cheapest and the smallest and the best of the group unless you are shooting past 1200 yds. My other shooting partner bought a Bushnell and he upgraded to a pair of Leica Geovid binos with rangefinder built in. The Bushnell was so unreliable and cheap in comparison.
For what I use mine for, Bushnell is good enough. Mine works to 1000 on reflective objects, 600 on large objects and 400 on most critters. Unless I end up with a pile of money, I won't be upgrading it as it is satisfactory for what I need it for.
I had one of them. It broke in the first year. Sent it to Bushnell and they sent it back with a quote for cost of repair to fix it. I bought a Swarovski and never looked back. Cost me $1600 in the end. I should have got the Swaro right away.
Leupold RX 750 , Got it from Bass Pro in the US, was cheaper than getting it here from everyone including Bass Pro Canada. was under 300 to my door. has bow and rifle mode, with 750 yard range. I am not a Leupold fan but this unit is solid , accurate , compact and reliable. Can't see where spending thousands would benefit. i will loose mine before it wears out.
Hunt on the golf course, but make sure you get one of those little maps first, they give you all sorts of help with yardage and doesn't cost a cent. might even get a free pencil too!!!! Handled a swaro today for $1330, wow,was it ever nice, it was hard to put down.
I'm also looking to see what I can find for under $300 with tax. I've heard many good reviews of the Redfield raider range finders. BPS sell them for around $200 at Vaughn mills. Also there was a lower end Bushnell model I'm looking into, I believe it was in the $210-$220 at BPS.
to be honest with you, forget it. U will not find one that will work for the money U quoted. If U do U will be buying nothing but trouble and frustration. Save Uer money and buy a Leica 1200. Even the 1200 will have trouble ranging deer at 500 and beyond. I figure if my Leica can't range it it's too far to shoot anyway.
