Is the 1911 the most reliable handgun design (after revolvers)??

As for what the others are saying, it looks as though it makes sense to buy a 1911 and also to have a glock/sig/whatnot as a second pistol. That way you can be an enthusiast, and also have another more modern gun too!

Why stop at two?

Be warned - once you start calling yourself an enthusiast, you're doomed! ;)

Hmmm so looking into a Glock may not be such a bad idea huh? haha
...Should I hold on to my 1911, and just work on it a little more?

What do you want?
...least jams/problems etc...

Ch-inky-bling-bling, or boring and reliable out-of-the-box?

You can send your Norinco to a real gunsmith like Rodger Kotanko, who will make it exactly what you want it to be, or you can buy a Glock that will work - and look - just like all of the other Glocks, or...why not both?

Because I am poor...that's why not both hahaha If you would like to start a "help me get a glock and modded 1911" fund, I am all down. Feel free to donate amounts of $100 +. Once I am done with shooting, I will pass them on for free to another youth looking to get into shooting! I get them free, I pass them on free!! haha I swear it would work!

In the 15 years I've been shooting.. With revolvers ,I've seen the hammer nose fall off, the crane get bent the advance mech get gummed and the HD safety fail on revolvers they require maintenance to keep working...

The only problem I have ever had with a 1911 is the front sight falling off.. Both were new Springfield's so I'd be tempted to classify that as a manufacturing defect more then a reliability issue.. (I finished the match without the sight ).. If they are dirty they shoot...

shooting ipsc I see lots of glocks have stopages, but no more than other makes. For that matter I see stopages with revolvers as well. Basically all guns 1911 included have stoppages. Less so if they are very well maintained.

I have a colt 1911 and a smith and wesson mp9, in the 3 yrs i have had both (round count i couldnt say but a reasonable amount i'd imagine) i have never had an issue with either. I know you were asking about glocks but i don't have any expereience there. Anywho, the newer firearms (glocks, mp's HK's, sigs etc) are amazing and awfully reliable. However i believe that the 1911 (as its been said before- in original JMB format) is about the most reliable semi auto ever made. This is the gun that was put through 2 world wars plus numerous other conflicts and used by police forces. The gun design was amazing and its history in action only serves to show just how reliable the gun was.

Plus I like them so that makes them the best :D

I think the 1911 is more reliable then revolvers..

I slightly disagree with you. ;)

Well, my S&W 686 has jammed more than my Para P14/45 ever has, about 2 or three times. Now, I have only about 4,500 rounds through my P14, so it still has plenty of time left to jam, if it ever wishes to do so; but somehow I don't think it will. :)

When firing UMC ammo, which may have been a little too hot for my 686. I think the problem may have been the primers backing out of the case, just enough to lock the cylinder and keep it from rotating. Even opening it to eject the empties was difficult. :(

I have had more than my fare share of revolver issues!

Most reliable? Don't know. The one you survive with I guess.

I kinda like those topic as an interesting discussion. I have owned and try several common design like CZ, beretta and Ruger pistol, still have a G17 and a 686. I don't mind to sell them all just to fund 1911 purchase, infact I already sold many of my handguns. 1911 is a culture, it combine art and craftmanship as a whole and can give you endless enjoyment. If I just want any shooting iron, I may just keep the Glock and CZ or the Beretta. Anyway know your gun and the gun will work, it appy to Glock or CZ or even Sig, I have seen people load too lite and unable to cycle the Sig's action. They are all reliable if you know about them.

I think I am gonna say 1911 are like Volkswagen.

People who love them normally have less problems then people who got one without knowing why.

Volkswagen have a really bad reliability reputation, but was in the top 3 manufacturers when all the others were about to pull the plug.

The Beetle is the only car in the world who was manufacture almost unchanged for 65 years and sold in every country
They built and sold over 21 millions of the Unreliable car.
Everybody in the world know the bug and can reconized it

Some say that VW are alive and have a soul.

My VW's are the most reliable cars I know. My Customers Vw's are different stories.

Like my Old mechanic mentor used the say (god bless his soul) 80% of the time the problem is behind the Steering.

Like my computer teacher used to say 99% of the time the problem is behind the keyboard.

My 1911 with my Mods and my reloads is the most reliable pistol I own, more reliable than my 686 which is still at Wortners for repairs

You are right, old beetles are the only car that I love if you ask me.

In MY humble opinion:

The 1911 is an outstanding piece of history, in the development of the handgun, but, I have yet to see ONE reliable example, personally. Lots of guys who ride motorcycles like Harley Davidsons, too, and I think the 1911 design is quite a parallel beast: Solid, outstanding for the time it was developed, and totally outdated now. You tend to either love 'em, or hate 'em.

YMMV

First thing, to say 1911's are "outdated" is blasphemy. Everyone that I have seen can pick up a 1911 and shoot it well. Second, buy a quality 1911 there is no other pistol in the world I would rather trust my life to. Third, the gun is only as good as you are.

The father son and holy Ghost all use 1911'a

Well put.

I have never owned a 686.
But I do own, an M1937 Brazilian, a Heavy Duty, Model 25-2, 624, 629, a Model 64-3, a Colt Anaconda, Colt Model 357, and a Dan Wesson Model 44. Except for those issues I posted earlier, no problems to speak of.
