Is the 1911 the most reliable handgun design (after revolvers)??

If I had to trust my life to something to go bang at least twice under any circumstance, I'd choose a double barreled shotgun.

Overwise, I'd choose a revolver, a wondernine, then a 1911, in decending order of reliability.

You can have a 1911 that fits & functions great and I agree its absolutely heavenly; you can have one which has something minor out of whack (weak mag spring, worn extractor, for two quick examples) and it is the most maddenly ignorant POS this side of the Styx. But then are we back to talking maintenance issues?

1911 is a culture, it combine art and craftmanship as a whole and can give you endless enjoyment.

Quite correct - the 1911 is world to itself, in many ways it's the last incarnation of the Samurai sword, an individual weapon best built to the taste of it's owner. It may be because of the influence of Jeff Cooper, Clint Smith, Chuck Taylor and Ken Hackathorn, but the 1911 has the mystique of being a warriors personal tool and object of near veneration. The fact that 2 1911's can be as different as a GI workhorse and a Wilson CQB, and still be 'the same gun' says a lot about the gun and the people who use it.

I have several 1911's & have owned them for years. IMO great guns.

However, if I had to carry a gun to protect myself, it would probably be a Glock .

+1...... Exactly what I would say.

I love my 1911's. But I have shot thousands of rounds thru a Glock 22 .40 cal. If I was going into a SHTF scenario with only a pistol I would choose a Glock 22 as my "go to".

NAA.

First thing, to say 1911's are "outdated" is blasphemy. Everyone that I have seen can pick up a 1911 and shoot it well. Second, buy a quality 1911 there is no other pistol in the world I would rather trust my life to. Third, the gun is only as good as you are.

You use the word "blasphemy" to question my opinion - I think that proves my point! I prefer to have a tool I can rely on, without impassioned faith in it as a gift from some imaginary higher power.

I haven't yet met a 1911 that I like, but I've only been looking for 20 years. You and yours, on the other hand, apparently feel no need to look beyond the old girl... Whatever - We all like pistols, right?

As a matter of fact you have been looking for almost longer than I have been alive. I have shot a lot of pistols: CZ's, Glocks, XD's, Norincos, revolvers etc. The only other one I didn't mind was The Springfield Armory XD, but I would like to try Sig's. I am probably this way because I'm a 45 ACP guy not a 9mm guy. There has been quotes by numerous people even Delta Force operators who feel "the 1911 is an extension of their arm" I couldn't of said it better. As it has been said before in the forum its the ammo you feed your pistol that leads to reliability issues.

The "Blasphemy thing" I know what it means otherwise I wouldn't use it. There is no need to pray before you use a 1911 it simply will work.

According to the US Military, the two most reliable pistols are the Beretta 92 and the Sig P226. I shoot better with the Sig. If you like the 1911, and the feel of a quality steel gun in your hand, the Glock, although a very reliable pistol, might not be your first choice. When I did my Black Badge, one guy on my course had a Glock that kept jamming, I've heard they have a problem with limp wristing.

My hand down favourite are the Sigs. If you want a slightly smaller gun, try the Sig P229. It is used by OPP, Secret Service, NCIS, FBI, the list goes on but we can't forget Jack Bauer ;)

It is incredibly accurate and incredibly reliable.

If you have a smaller hand, there is the SIG P226 E2 (Enhanced Ergonomics).

Also keep in mind .45 ammo is a lot more expensive than 9mm or .40 cal. If you intend on shooting competitively I'd recommend 9mm.

I have always loved the look of the sigs, and they seem to appeal to me (the love for all metal frames etc). I was just thinking glock for reliability.

I assume many of the sigs come in .45? It wouldn't be competitive, so no need to worry about thousands of rounds.

The Sig 1911 will look like pretty much like any other 1911 from any other manufacturer and will have 1911 pros and cons.

If you like the looks of a Sig, you are probably thinking of the P220 family of guns... 226, 228, 229 etc.

Reliability... both Sig and Glock are known for being ultra reliable, Glocks are much less expensive because they are plastic. Both have excellent resale value.

At the end of the day, go to a dealer with a range and fire them both. Whatever fits better in your hand, you will likely shoot better with. If you have a smaller hand like me, you must try the P226 E2.

If your choice for .45 is to make bigger holes, or more stopping power the .40 S&W has been deemed to be, “the ideal cartridge for personal defense and law enforcement.” .45 cal ammo cost $3 more per box of 50 and you can put more .40 cal rounds in a mag.
