my conversation at the Homestead Range in Alberta. (public range for non-restricted only.)

guy walks up as I'm leaving the range and packing up my truck.

guy: you shouldn't have that up here (gesturing to my pimped out 858)

me: oh I'm sure its fine, thats what rifle ranges are for.

guy: oh then whats the banana clip for?

Me: it holds my ammo, but i see where you're going with this, have a look, they are pinned to only hold 5 bullets.

guy: well this range is only for non restricted rifles.

me: oh, i assure you this is registered as non restricted. Say the word and I'll show you the certificate.

guy: *starts to back peddle* well i just don't want to see you or anyone get in trouble. I am the president of (not sure what he said, maybe the alberta rifle association or somthing).

I shook his hand and said that i had a lot of fun shooting today.

Just further proof that the 858 looks so cool it should be banned!!!!!

I would have said if your the president of such club then you should re educate yourself on whats restricted and whats not.

ya, i though he should know a little better. oh well i politely handed his ass to him.

I made sure he felt comfortable approaching me because there is no use being a #### about it.

I dont think you would be a #### by stating he should know better. Its people in his position should take it upon themselves to educate what is legal and what is not.

Nicely handled. I think he was polite and appropriate as well. Just because we know about the many cool, unrestricted rifles, I don't expect others to know as well. There must be new rifles as well coming out that are non restricted yet look, shall we say, controversial.

It's are silly gun laws.
How can non gun owners understand or participate in discussions about our gun laws when even gun owners cant make sense of them?

Good job on being polite and civil about it and by the sounds of it he thought maybe you were breaking the law and didn't want you to get in trouble with the man..

+1 it doesn't sound like anything 'untoward' happened here.

I'm in my mid-40's but only got into shooting sports 3-4 years ago. I wouldn't have known any better then either and might have reacted 'badly'. Now I own restricteds and make no assumptions.

Next time:
1. Ask him to fire it
2. Tell him how much it cost (basic, without extras); and
3. Tell him what a crate of 1,120 rounds cost
Then be prepared to answer many questions like where to buy one.

I partially agree, and partially do not. I guess it comes from expecting joe-blow fellow range user to mind their own f**King business unless somebody is acting in an obviously dangerous fashion.

... but then again I prefer an empty range.

....and that is how most peoples out there including our government by just looking at the firearms without understanding how the firearm functions...they want it to be classified as restricted or banned, just because due to the fact ,they all look black...like the guns they seem in the movies and on TV. lol
