SKS: Optics, sights & mounts.... update feb 16, 2010

Where and how much to buy the converta mount?

If I can find one my plan is to try to mount it to my Norinco SKS.

All the ones I have purchased were off of Ebay for between $15.00 to $20.00.
You can order them at your local gun shop if they deal in Weaver mounts.

Any one of these will work.

48881 SEE-UNDER REM 870, 1100 LOW RINGS
48884 SEE-UNDER MOSSBERG 500/835 LOW RINGS
48883 SEE-UNDER WIN 1200, 1300 LOW RINGS

Thanks Satain!

edit - Ahh, they don't actually carry ATI. They carry another company. I will settle for it if I don't find a Canadian ATI dealer.
Then there is a need to call Frank @ Marstar as they carry the entire ATI product line in Canada.

I just intalled the ATI strike force 6 pos. stk on a mini 14 that i bought from another member, its awesome.Sorry to rub it in.

I built my own, but used the Choate idea as a jumping off point. Thus far, the feedback has been very kind and very positive, to the point that another CGN'er was using my thread to build his own. Some VERY nice pics and work on this thread.

So I bought a Tapco T6 stock with the spike bayonet cut.

I order the 3 piece rail kit for the front, and then after I paid for it I thought "I hope I can mount the rails with the bayonet cut there".

Anyone know?

Also, I am looking at putting a scope on my new toy. I was checking out this scope mount:

Leapers 3rd Gen SKS High-Profile See-Thru Weaver Mount

Latest SKS high profile scope mount designed with raised integral Weaver style rail and AccuShot 1” tactical rings. 5 slots for flexible mounting positions. All steel construction. Easy to install. Simply replaces the receiver cover. Scope return to zero when reinstalled

So, I guess you can swap the receiver covers out at will, if you want to use a scope or if you want to use the regular sites. I dunno...

I know I need a scope mount. I also wonder if the scope will be in the way of loading the rounds in, with it mounted over the receiver like that.

I'm a total noob, so any positive input would be highly appreciated.

Paul from SKS man called me today and told me there was not enough room to have the foregrip AND the bayonet, so I'm going to drop the bayonet.

I order the Lepers site after all, and some magazines too. Hope the Lepers scope mount wasn't a mistake...

Weaver Converta Mount

Did you cut the bottom one yourself or did you find one that size?
I was looking around ebay for one of these weaver mounts and they all appear to be the long style as the one on top. Decided to go for one of these. I have a choate one not installed yet, it seems like it will be a pain in the ass to remove the bolt and bolt carrier with the choate.

Yes I did cut the Weaver rail to accommodate the size of the scope bell, no fabrication for the red dot. The weaver rail length on all the converta mounts is the same.

I was looking over my bits and pieces and found a ''B Square'' side mount made for a Browning shotgun-and apart from relocating the holes-it appears it could be mounted much as the Choate mount. It look likes it would be high enough to allow taking out the bolt and cover.Has anybody tried this application?

I'm no mechanic but I do have a small drill press-is this a drill and tap job you could do yourself if you took care to line up the mount so it would be level?

So I installed the Lepers G2 receiver cover with teh weaver rail, shown in my post above, in post 52.

Looks good. I have a 4X scope that is nice and short. Will post pics later. The thing I like about the spare receiver cover is that if I want to remove the scope I can do so, without messing up the zero. Then I can just put it back on when I want.

Leave your shell deflectors on the bench *Update June 1/2013*

With the recommendation of a few members Ive decided to post a bit of info on a mod that Aramir recommended. It seems there is a solution to the SKS ejecting spent casings straight up in the air that looks nearly factory original and works like a dream. By clearancing a small portion of the ejection window, it will allow the ejector to kick the shells straight out to the right. I forgot to take pics before but you can compare to your own rifle to see how small an amount of material needs to be removed. On the lower left corner of the ejection window there is an angle that needs to be cut back to a smaller radius. Thats it! You dont need to lengthen the window any, just turn the angle into a small radius and youre done.

And touched up with some fresh bluing, reassembled

You can barely tell its been modified, until you start firing. Now I can mount a fullsize scope without worry, or an ugly shell deflector.

*Update*
Decided to take more pics of the latest SKS to get this mod.
What you'll need:
An SKS! (but everyone has one of those, don't they?)
Die grinder or rasp
Small carbide burr, 1/4" or so diameter works well
Masking tape

Optional:
Compressed air (makes cleaning the filings out of the receiver, barrel and rear sight base a lot easier)

Step 1: Degrease receiver. You want the tape to stick. Run a tape line along the bottom edge of the ejection window parallel with it

Step 2: Run a second tape line from the top left corner of the ejection window, intersecting the other tape line 90 degrees

Step 3: Using your die grinder, remove the exposed material. You can leave a little radius in the bottom corner.

Step 4: deburr and smooth any new edges, clean, lube and reassemble. Test fire the rifle. You may have not removed quite enough material yet. If this happens, remove some more. Remember not to cut down into the bottom edge of the ejection window as this will not affect ejection but will make your work look sloppy. Keep pushing the radius and rear edge to the rear until the rifle ejects at 2 to 3 o'clock. Spent casings will fly forward. When youre happy with your work, touch up the area with some cold blue.

Step 5: Go enjoy that pig!
