Just picked up this all stainless 9mm recently with original manual + 4 mags,used but in very nice condition.They were discontinued around 1990 and only produced for a couple of years.From what I have heard they fell out of favor just as the Hi Caps were getting popular as the mags for these only came in 8 and 9's.Most were prohibs, so I had to buy this one as I had never seen one before in restricted.I have not had a chance to to take it out yet and probably won't be able to for a while due to a recent injury.Any opinions on this pistol for those that might have one. Reliability? Accuracy?

I've owned so many different variants of single stack S&W autos I can't remember them all.
They were all totally reliable and most were very accurate.

I just hate the look of those HUGE adjustable sights though!

The 3rd gen S&W autos are nice. Especially in stainless. Usually very reliable & accurate. Maybe a tad on the heavy side though. I've had a Model 1066 [single stack in 10mm] and currently have a Model 4006 [double stack in .40 S&W]. Personally, I like 'em.

I have a model 39-2 & really like it. I bought one when they first came out, then traded it away. Then I missed it & got a replacement.

My experience has been that it is very accurate & I find it very comfortable to shoot.
If you ever want to sell that restricted barrel, let me know. Mine is stock & a prohib.

I can get past the sights,but must admit it looks a little odd.Do you think that maybe those blades were some bright idea for concealed carry so that the rear sights would not hang up on clothing?

I am OK with the sights, at least you can see them!

I like these guns but I found them a pain to field strip. The slide latch on the ones I had were always very tight in the frame.

Other than that, a good gun.

I agree,the first thing I did was field strip it and found it a little tricky to line up the slide and push out the latch at the same time.But once you do it the first time the next time is childs play.I guess all semis have their own little quirks.

What is the standard barrel length on these? I love this pistol and all their varients.... 59... whatever and other designations. I'm just surprised that they're prohib's. I've never seen or held one up close, but they look like a full sized pistol similar to a 1911 or a Beretta. It sure as hell looks bigger than HK Pm7 or a G19 even with a restricted barrel. Please excuse me if my pistol references are off. It's late and the sandman is calling.

I think that the original prohibs were 3.75" and or 4".The 3906 is actually not as big as it looks.Just took a quick measurement on my restricted version and the lenght is roughly 6" from barrel to the end of the slide and 4.5 inches from the top of the slide to the bottom of the mag well. Nice packin' size if only it were legal here.
 
Very Very well made firearm, I have the 659 which is a high cap version of the 3906 and I love it. the only down side is the shrouded rear sight, it is hard to get a proper sight picture quickly and I much prefer a fixed rear sight. But its one accurate and smooth shooting pistol and a good catch to get one restricted class. Good find, enjoy.
