mrsmitty,
I choose Other and would select something from one of the following sources, depending on who could best fulfill my requirements. FYI, most are backlogged and/or not accepting much new work:

  • Chuck Rogers, Rogers Precision
  • Dave Erickson, Condition One Pistolsmithing
  • Steve Morrison, MARS Armament
  • Nighthawk Custom
From your list, I would go with Wilson Combat.

My 'dos centavos'.

Sorry ran out of room. All three of the mentioned company's make exellent product and they all share different fitting philosiphy's,it basically come's down to what a person desire's(my wife would never be able to pull a slide back on a bear, but a Ed Brown no problem)On the other side of the coin someone that does have the strength to pull the slide back on a bear would know there might be slightly less muzzle flip on a bear because of this atribute. So it all boils down to personal preference ,and what one feel's when they rack the slide back.By the way someone mentioned that they would be suspect of bear's or brown's warranty,i think that comment is entirely unfounded and useless as it sound's like they have never had a warranty issue with either(So how would they know in the fist place).........:confused:

PLEASE tell me that you spelled it "bear" instead of "Baer" not one but four times because of some autocorrect thing and not because you don't know how it's spelled? :D

i totally agree with usp. All in the list is nothing more but high end stock gun. A custom made gun is something they build for your spec, use up the parts and finish that you want for your gun and there will be only one. Otherwise what you pay for is just a high end production gun. If you really want somthing different, you can buy parts and flame from different source up to your liking and have a 1911 gunsmith put them together, that is a real custom gun.

The only mortal that has a "real" LAV 1911 is KevinB
I have a Vickers/Nighthawk and a photo LAV and myself. Close but no cigar!!!

Hey Smitty, Take a look at Gemini customs if you get a chance....
Those are some custom 1911's. (Check my Avatar for example)
Im currently doing a custom build as well with a Caspian Damascus slide.
about 6 month wait just to get the slide.
Enjoy whatever you chose, but I couldn't vote because to me those are not custom 1911's. Just High end. Cheers

Actually there a very small number of true LAV 1911's in the US - at least two have been seen on 1911.org - they are not for sale at any price. These were made before Nighthawk, when he was doing 1911's as an 'on again/off again' thing due to his operational status at the time. Not the prettiest custom handguns made (plain finish, and not a lot of gee whiz stuff) but their owners are extremely proud of them.

Another option is Dlask. I have never shot one, but I hear he builds some pretty kick ass 1911's and I am sure to suit your needs and wants.

That's what I was thinking... I've had a chance to play with some of his 1911... and they were pretty darn nice.

As an added 'free' bonus not available with the other brand, they will say "made in :canadaFlag: "

:)

The Dlasks I've handled are beautiful pistols, very accurate and very solid, and the current ones have a lovely big Maple Leaf on the slide. Someone else who can build a 'killer' 1911 is Barry at Bits of Pieces - he worked at Dlask many years ago, when it was a pure gunsmithing operation. There's also Roger Kotanko in Ontario, nothing but praise from his clients and Casey at TacOrd from what I've heard is doing pistol work, again a very satisfied group of clients. The reality is that these guys can build guns that are 'to order', at least as accurate, worked "by hand", and probably cheaper than what you're looking at from the 'States - if you're not hung up on a name they may be worth a look.

UPDATE

Well finally purchased a pistol. Bought an Ed Brown special forces. Was real tempted by the Wilson Combat cqb but for almost 500 bucks more I didn't figure it was worth it. Plus I am not really into the whole front slide serrations on the CQB.

Congrats!!! I've been finding myself drawn to the Special Forces as well! Did you find one that was available immediately or did you have to order one?

Good choice! Ed Brown pistols have a nice look to them; slide serrations at the rear only and tasteful markings. So many guns today have huge, gaudy "billboard" markings.
