My $14 WSS headphones do nothing for a .308 next to me so i want to buy some electronic ones so me and my wife and kid don't become deaf before hitting 40. i don't want to spend a fortune, any ideas? How much and where would help too

Any detriment to the ones that go in the ear as opposed to muffs?
I use Peltor Swat Tacs and I love them; thye work well shooting a 357 revolver and I use them off and on with my 375 H&H with no problems. I also use them for hunting; they keep my ears warm an let me know how close the deer are actually getting without stepping out 
. They are not cheap, but I think they were worth every penny I paid; I had the Pleot Sound Traps (fancy Tac 6) before and they ate batteries like a bugger compared to these ones (auto shut off).

Sound is conducted into the ear from the temporal bones. Ear plugs only block off the ear canal and don't reduce the sound conducted by the bone. Hearing loss can still occur if plugs are used. However plugs will delay the loss. Ear muffs that cover the ears block off a good portion of the sound transferred by the bone further reducing hearing loss.

I use the Peltors Tac (behind the neck style) , the Radians ProAmp and a set I bought at Princess Auto.
Frankly, I like the Radians best with the $200+ Peltor and the Princess Auto nearly even. Nearly, the edge goes to to Peltors because I think they give slightly better noise reduction.
The $150 I spent on the Radians was my best investment in electronic hearing protection. So far.

My recommendation also - worth the cost... and pay a bit extra to get the gel filled ear cushions.

I bought what I believe to be the cheapest possible Peltor brand electronic muffs. Only one ear has a speaker, but I'm going shooting not to a poetry recital. They were 40 bones at Cabela's down south. Good enough for shooting indoors without the pounding headache I used to get.
Check the NRR numbers. Some electronic muffs are not as effective as the better non-electronic ones. The higher the NRR, the better.
If you double up and wear plugs and muffs, the combined NRR isn't the total of the muffs and plugs added together, but is better than either alone.
Electronic muffs are also a safety factor on a range - you can hear the RO and what is going on around you.
I use ribbed earplugs - not foamies - under a pair of Brownells/Radians. Multiple mics, stereo hearing. Even with the plugs in, I can hear conversation. Keep the plugs on a cord around my neck when I'm on the range, so they are always handy.
Also made a pair of the mould them yourself silicone plugs. As plugs go, they are excellent.

I think the Sordins are the highest quality in terms of electronic headsets. However for me they don't cancel or reduce quite as much noise as I wished they would. I like triage's idea of wearing moulded plugs underneath your headset.
Another vote for MSA Sordin Supreme Pro-X Ear Muff from SRS Tactical in Calgary. I've got the Gel pads and they're worth it (comfortable). Easy to turn off and on as well as Auto shut off means a lot to me as I was eating up batteries by forgetting to turn my Radians off.

I agree. If you look at even the expensive electronic ones already mentioned the NRR rating is only about as high as 20db while the peltor ones I have that are not electronic are 32db. This represents the amount of db that is being reduced to your ear.
