At the ripe old age of 56, I went to the range and fired a gun for the very first time (thanks to an acquaintance who was good enough to 'show me the ropes'. What fun.

It was a .22 Smith & Wesson AR 15-22 (hope I got that right) with a scope.
Kinda fun, but I know the "tactical look" is not what I want...It was very light (good), but I didn't care for the 'toylike' feel and the 'wannabe' factor. (just my uninformed opinion, no offense to anybody who owns one)

Got a guy coming over to the house tonight & tomorrow to teach the CFSC courses, so I've got the ball rolling, anyway.

For my first gun, I'm thinking along the lines of a
Ruger 10-22,
Remington 597
and the "survivalist" in me really likes the marlin "papoose", but I don't know if the portability compromises the functionality of it (especially the accuracy).
I'm reasonably sure I want a gun that is magazine (not tube) fed, unless someone can convince me otherwise.

Anyway, sorry for rambling, just thought I'd say hello.

Welcome aboard - I'm in Vancouver also and am happy to offer advice re gun stuff any time you feel like asking. If you end up like most of us you will eventually own a number of items (inc probably something that looks plastic that you wouldn't consider buying today LOL ! )

Welcome aboard! Your instructor wouldn't happen to be Kornitsky, would it? I don't know as much as 90% of the people here, but if you have questions, I'm willing to help. A bit of advice, go into Reliable Gun, Italian Sporting Goods and International Shooting Supplies (only minutes from Whalley). The more you handle, the better your decision will be. Also, check out canadianreloadradio.com which often has diverse shooting sports mentioned that you can investigate further if your interest is piqued.
 
Welcome. Go with the 10/22. If you want to "mod" it out later there is no limit to after market parts. Me, I just shoot them as is out of the box. Thousands of gophers and a lot of jackrabbits later, never had a problem.
 
Can you PM me the guys info that is coming to your house, that is exactly what I'm after. I have Korniskys info, just looking at what others are charging and how long the course takes at your own home.
 
IMO you can't get better than Mike Kornitsky. Solid instructor, makes certain you are safe, comparable rates to other instructors, comes to your home...a definite 10. I had my sister, brother in law, coworker and wife take the course through him (do I get a free box of ammo with every 10 referrals?). If anyone is sitting on the fence, give him a call and set it up. He brings all the deactivated guns to your home so you can learn how to use them. Just buy the book in advance and read through it if you can.

I have a Remmy 597, and with a little tweaking, I am very happy with it. There isn't a lot of aftermarket parts available for it but if you are looking for a rifle that you can take out of the box and shoot as is, you won't be disappointed.
