hey guys,
I want to use an 11.5" barrel from fab sports on my ruger 10/22. From my understanding the OAL must be 26" or greater for the firearm to remain non-restricted. Does adding the 11.5" barrel make this a restricted firearm because its shorter than the factory barrel?

My cert says barrel length is 470mm or greater. 11.5" barrel length is aprox 292 mm. I measured OAL and it will be aprox 30" to the muzzle if I put the 11.5" barrel on. Will I need to re-register the firearm or am I ok to use the barrel with no worries because OAL is still greater than 26"?

Thanks

On rimfires barrel length does not matter . As long as it meets the 26 oal your good to go. Unless you cut a barrel then it has to be 18.5 but manufactured barrels can be as short as u want . The same rules apply to shotguns

thanks for the info i wasn't sure about it so i wanted to check here. i was on the nfa site http://www.nfa.ca/node/128 and didn't understand fully about the lengths. it says

" I have, for example, a .22 rimfire semi-auto 30-shot rifle with a 9-3/4" barrel, a .410 single-shot shotgun with an 11-3/4" barrel, two 12-gauge pump-action shotguns with 14" barrels, a .22 rimfire pump-action rifle with a 17-7/8" custom barrel and a .223 calibre rifle with a 14" barrel -- AND ALL OF THEM ARE NON-RESTRICTED. THAT IS BECAUSE THEY EITHER LEFT THE FACTORY WITH THOSE BARRELS, OR WERE FITTED WITH FACTORY- OR CUSTOM-MADE BARRELS IN THOSE LENGTHS AT SOME LATER DATE, and were NEVER fitted with a longer barrel."

i dont understand the "never fitted with a longer barrel" part. does it mean that i cant have a barrel shorter than the factory barrel, but only if the firearm came without a barrel?

Actually, that rule applies to all manual action centerfires, rifle or shotgun. The only exceptions are centerfire semi's, which must have an 18.5" barrel.

so.... it's ok to use an 11.5" aftermarket barrel on a .22LR semi as long as OAL is 26" or greater and it remains non-restricted? lol i'm getting confused.

The only "biggie" is that (as stated) You (or I), personally cannot cut a barrel to less than 18.5". A "manufactured one" can be shorter but, the OAL (Over All Length) must be maintained.

Confused? Now how could our gun laws possibly be confusing? (insert wee titter here...)
