What Animal Is This?

It's a fisher. Kill it. They will devastate a forest for wildlife. Not to mention attacking cats, small dogs, some deer, etc... It even tried to take on a hunting buddy of mine a few years ago, while he was sitting in the tree stand. Get rid of them...

lol. Got a hate on for them or something?

And how the hell will they "devastate a forest for wildlife"? There seems to be plenty of wildlife still around even with fishers running around.

Tell your friend to enjoy it, not many get to see them in the wild. And tell him to watch out for his cats and small dogs.

I have them on my families property, as well as plenty of other animals. They certainly havent wiped everything else out.

They are the fastest North American animal in trees. They are nasty lil buggers and will eat house pets and anything else. That being said, if it isn't bugging you, I see no reason to disturb it. Not that I'd bat an eye if you did.

If they eat house cats and those repulsive little 5 pound yappers that some folks want to call 'dogs', well I'm all for them. Hell, I'd be willing to start raising them just to turn a bunch loose around here.

I don't know if I've met anyone that was really concerned about the legalities of it. If you see one its history. If you manage to hit one with the car back up and run over it again just to be sure:)

I guess that would be the attitude if you lived in a place with no real predators. Hell, we've got those critters out here. Just don't bother us much what with all the grizz, wolves and cougars.

Posting for a friend who asked what this animal is. Found in central ontario area. Wasn't hunting, just observed it in his backyard. He estimated 8-10 pounds, a little larger than a cat.

Thanks

Where is his back yard located? Might be time to bring out the ol sks, of if he's in the city, maybe somthing with some string and some pointed sticks with feathers at one end........

They are a very interesting creature and deserve a little respect - I have had one encounter with one and was impressed with its aggression. Was hunting .. following moose tracks when an animal (I discovered later was a fisher) crossed the trail I was on about 15 ft in front of me. I stopped - the fisher stopped and we stared at each other. He didn't move - just stood there and glared at me. I decided to scare it away by making a short lung (a step or two) at it and yelling. After all it wasn't that big - I figured it would run. The SOB didn't budge an inch!! Then he lunged at me .. bared his teeth and growled ... and stopped after a few feet. He seemed satisfied that he had scared the hell out of me (obvious by the 4 foot backwards standing broad jump I did! Then the little bxxstard turned and slowly trotted off into the bush along the route he was originally traveling ... he couldn't have cared less about me. I think it took me 10 minutes to get my heart to slow down. Fishers define the term "attitude"!!

Its a fisher 100%.
Leave it alone and enjoy the fact you got to see one running free. Not many people get to. Its not decimating the local wildlife, won't attack you and your children, won't break into your house and steal your firearms and won't rape you in your sleep- contrary to some people beliefs.

Now if you let food in the form of a slow moving housecat run loose in the woods it might do the natural thing.... :runaway:

Definitely a Fisher! Give him another month or so with the cooler weather and he'll make a prime pelt. Looking forward to trapping season! :)

Very true but illegal. They are a terribly destructive animal and have done a real number on our turkey flocks. I've seen a handfull of them and twice they were eating cats. Best thing you could do is try to live trap it and let it go in Toronto.... He'll eat well there and leave you and your local wildlife alone..... :D

I think all these other poster's ahead of me are wrong. I'm sure it's a Mongolian tree Rat.

I've never seen mongolian tree rats on the protected list..... If you're sure of your target blast away..... ;)

this is also illegal I am no GW but I think you have to release wild life in no more then a 5km radius? I do not relocate stuff so I do not know the exact radius maybe some of the experts could elaborate?

Fisher, most definately. We have quite a few out where I generally hunt, and judging by the number of grouse, snowshoe hare, birds, and other small game, I can definately say they will not clean out an area of game. Especially with the amount of other predators I have seen over the last few years.

In every encounter I have had with these nasty little buggers (which is upwards of 6 now) I have never once actually felt threatened. Don't get me wrong, I am sure one could do some serious damage if it actually got a chance and wanted to, but to anything over 30 pounds I can't see a serious threat.

Internet tough guy? Nah. These guys redefine tough guy...lots of attitude and enough spunk to almost back it up. Enjoy the view, and tell your friend to get some good photography in before it moves on to riper pickings.
