Coydog/Mutant fox question

I saw this animal this morning, looked more like a fox but the colouring was like a calico cat, very vivid,orange/white/black/brown. Iv heard coyote and dog interbreed but do foxes? It was only 100' away so I got a good look. Very bushy tail also.
 
haven't seen it personally but I don't see why a fox couldn't breed with some other type of canine. All dogs essentially are the same critter, just different attributes are specifically bred for but it doesn't change where they all originated from.
 
While in Inuvik on business, we used to see many unusual colored foxes up there. Some red, (not usual up there) some silver foxes and rather odd looking cross foxes. Oldfart, if you drove about 150 miles north of where you live now, cross foxes are more commonly seen.

My best guess, with your desrciption is the cross fox........

Foxes are not dogs. While both are from the family Canidae the dogs - and wolves, coyotes, etc - are from the dog genus Canis which has 78 chromosomes arranged in 39 pairs. Red fox are from the Vulpes genus which have 38 chromosomes.

While members of Canis family can freely interbreed they can not cross with members of the Vulpes genus.

It could be Mozilla's Firefox. Very rare in Canada. :runaway:

Brutis, the animal is close but the colour is much more vivid.We see plenty of yotes, bears and deer in our backyard but I have never seen anything like this, it was very beautiful.

The markings of the cross fox are unique for each individual animal. The proportions and locations of the colours will vary from animal to animal. Back when I was trapping them some were near black while others were much lighter and brighter in colour.
